10 City Tours in Madeira That You Shouldn't Miss

May 31, 2021 Florencio Paulino

Breezy Madeira is an eponymous island in the Madeira Islands, a Portuguese archipelago. The capital city of Funchal was settled in the 15th century and is a colorful collection of gardens, religious sites, and quirky tourist attractions like the thatched-roof Madeira Story Centre. Hike to the summit of Pico Ruivo and you’ll feel like you’ve climbed through the clouds. Unwind over a glass of Madeira wine, an historic fortified beverage that’s musky and subtly sweet.

This is a beautiful place where you can see one side of the island, then walk a few steps and see the other. There are plenty of levadas on the way up (or down) to take in the scenery and valleys below. Also there is a cafe which is very reasonable, €2 for a cheese and ham tostie for example.

Every time I go to Madeira, I have to book a tour with Dinarte since he knows the island as his back yard. The experience is incredible and his knowledge of the place cannot be matched. Also, the day will be filled with lots of laughter, good food and amazing scenery. About good food, I cannot recommand enough the Fanal tour with espetada. I didn't know I needed the tasty esperada barbecue, surrounded by the ancient trees and the little birds curious about what's cooking. Dinarte is also an amazing chef and he chooses all the ingredients himself, only the freshest produce pass the test. Do yourself a favour and have a barbecue in Fanal, you will thank yourself later ????.

We have used Viator/Tripadvisor small group tours on many holidays, always excellent, and the ultimate 2 day tour was for us the ultimate tour I would recommend anyone taking this tour to have Renato Rodrigues as their driver/tour guide, because he gave us 2 interesting and memorable days. His extensive knowledge of the island and his way of interacting with his passengers meant that he was always able to answer our numerous questions, and we returned home with a much greater knowledge of Madeira even though we had made previous visits. If we had to choose, we preferred the West tour as the weather was better, but we enjoyed the East side as well. Thanks again Renato.

Madeira Island is considered one of the best places in the world for walks and walks. Our volcanic formation has unparalleled beauty, and offers us a variety of trails that cross the entire island with wonderful landscapes. Exploring these routes on foot reveals landscapes of extreme beauty and puts you in direct contact with the exuberant nature (fauna and flora) of this beautiful island, deep valleys, tunnels and beautiful waterfalls that involve us in peaceful or challenging paths, but always of stunning beauty. In Madeira there are the levadas that are water channels created since the 15th century to take rainwater from the interior to the agricultural fields of the entire island. Today we have more than two thousand kilometers of levadas, with great potential for walking routes to be explored.

Sintra is a beautiful & romantic town in Lisbon. A day trip to Sintra & the Penna palace has left me with replenished energy and superb sensual booster rather than a days physical energy drain out, touring the whole place! Being the last palace built of the 19th century, it has a mix of modern majesty and the ancient mix of architecture. The surrounding forest designed & created with more than 2000 species of trees brought from all over the world, gives us the peaks of freshness, when you walk through the woods. Walking uphill to the Cross at the highest point of the hill was a thrill. Apart from the Sintra town hop-in hop-off tour buses, you have a seperate bus that operates as hop-in & off, inside the penna palace hill gates. Start early from Lisbon to Sintra to breathe in a lengthy time in the Penna palace & the woods and not to miss, the Cape Roca which is the western most edge of the European continent overlooking the Atlantic ocean. You get a train to Sintra from Rossio metro station at Placa Avenida. Organised tours to Sintra from Lisbon are quite expensive. Visit to the Moorish castle can be optimal and a personal choice.
