February 26, 2022 Kelli Reichel

Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic and a UNESCO world heritage site, is the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the Americas and one of the most populous cities in the Caribbean. The city is a mix of old world charm and modern Latin flair. Its medieval palaces and fortresses mix with nightlife and shopping to rival any modern city in the world. You'll find pristine beaches and hidden gems like a salsa/merengue club set inside a huge underground cave.

On the tour in Santo Domingo we found this beautiful small church. To take a break from the steaming sun this is a right place to be coooled down a bit. And of course to be closer to God. Pray one, and say thank you for all of those moments of your life like this also.

Basilica Cathedral of Santa Maria la Menor

Reviewed By dustythoughts - Manchester, United States

This beautiful cathedral, the earliest built in the Americas, still maintains a quiet, peaceful aura to it despite its tourist attractiveness, and is a lovely spot to both admire the architecture and to sit for a few minutes amidst the bustle of the area. There's a statue of Christopher Columbus near the cathedral, and has a history stretching back to the 16th century.

Regina Angelorum The Church and Convent The best part of beauty is that which no picture can express... There are many stories and legends around this historic building, some of them between Faith and Architecture. Among those we founded a remarkable one that goes: "... the visitor, suddenly, felt an Anguish and vertigo feelings. He hurry up to the Doctor who after taking his pulse, symptoms and hearing his comments, looking into his patient almost blank eyes, told him; its nothing serious dear, you are just suffering an overdose of beauty, emanating from that architectural work of art" Last Saturday we went to this small, beautiful Church to one of my dearest grandsons wedding. This "Regina Angelorum" Church is among the most after-sought churches for Catholic weddings in our Colonial City...being the others; la "Catedral primada de America" (of course), "El Convento de los Dominicos", Iglesia "Nuestra Señora de La Alta Gracia" y "Las Mercedes Church" (reviewed by myself last month) Precisely Here, at "Regina Angelorum" Church, on Padre Billini street, our dear Daughter Lisandra Lucrecia got married back in 2008 Construccion of the building begun back in mid XVI Century and lasted many years due to several periods of financial difficulties in our Island History. Before begining this Review notes , as we say in spanish; "Nobleza obligue" and I'm obligue to mention that this Religious Beauty was graciously and generously restored by "Orden de Malta", Dominican Chapter An architectural Facade detail (with heaviness feeling image), classic in style, is supported by two pillars which are enhancing the thick wooden doble door of its main entrance. Histories says that it was built for the Cathedral, but rather ended up in this Regina Angelorum Church. Centerpiece of this elaborated facade is occupied by a magnificent stone-elaborated Altar, in which is notorious the absent of its main religious figures....for that; History says: "...this space was holding a beautiful Virgen dressed in Gold and Jewels " Those historic jewel details were stolen by non other than Francis Drake, pirates to ours Island natives..."Sir" to "others" (the British), back in 1586 when he (and his "pirates")... vandalized and stole our Colonial City best sacred and historic treasures The rectangular architectural floor plant is typical of Colonial Churches in the Americas and ends fronting a semicircular Presbiterio. Its high located chorus, balconied areas, had direct access to the religious nouns Convent, allowing to participate in Mass together with seglar church goers, but preserving their claustro-privacy As architect myself I couldn't overlook its roofing structural pattern, built in the manner if the most pure Gothic-Isabelino style in the Island. Besides that its nerve-rounded Vaulted ceilings are hold into place by its large, magnificent stone abutments...mainly visible from the small, cute quaint plaza on its east side. The great gothic vault is covering above that only rectangular Nave, but continue over crossing areas over Presbiterio and Seglar religious Areas. A magnificent Church detail- Center of importance- is localized on its great Altar Fronting details, worked on elaborated silver embossments, decorated with small squares details which are holding, at the same time, very elaborated Rosetones....all together holding a great Frieze, as a remembrance to the religious Church vocation; The Regina Angelorum... Mary, Queen of Angels ! If interested in simple, but great Islander architecture and history this is "a must visit" Church....while in beautiful Santo Domingo Colonial City !
