Drimnagh Castle

Drimnagh Caste is Ireland's only moated castle. Set in the suburb of Drimnagh in South Dublin, we are an authentic medieval castle with over 700 years of history. We have been the setting for many films, TV shows and historic events.

I never realised there was a castle in Drimnagh until very recently. I visited the castle a few days ago and being off season, it was just me so I had my own private tour guide, who was excellent, John is his name. It's a small castle but has a lot of history and it's well worth a visit. It's Ireland's only moated castle. Definitely recommend checking it out!

We took the Toots train from the grand hotel which was a fun experience for everyone to start with. Took the kids to the well laid out kids playground while some of the adults had coffee and huge scones in the very good Avoca restaurant Took the 12-30 tour of the castle which was a 45 minute very informative tour of the castle We then followed the fairy trail which the kids loved and a wander round the gardens probably didn’t take in everything so much to do. Avoca shop is excellent as well.

Dublin Castle

Dublin Castle was for 700 years the seat of British power in Ireland. Today you can still view the remains of the 13th century structure as part of the guided tour. The present Dublin Castle dates from the mid 1700's and today is used by the Irish Governemnt for state events such as the inauguration of the Irish President and state banquets for visiting dignatories. Amongst the highlights are the Ladies Drawing Room, the Throne Room and St. Patricks Hall.

We first came on a Historical Walking Tours (excellent!) but didn’t go in. We came back to take the tour. The guided tour was excellent and unlike the self guided tour takes you down to the Viking and Norman ruins which are fascinating. The chapel and the state apartments are really interesting to see. It’s a very good tour.

Rathfarnham Castle

Reviewed By Tandum14

This castle is now more like a grand stately home on the inside and it's been through so many changes over the years. Because I visited last week, in the off season, I had my own solo guided tour by a very knowledgeable guide called Nicole. I live quite locally so it was very interesting to hear all the history and to see a model of how Rathfarnham looked way back in the day, before all the housing estates. There's a lot to know and learn from this tour and I'd definitely recommend. There are lovely grounds attached and a very nice tea room also.

Ardgillan Castle

Ardgillan Castle and Demesne is Ireland's hidden gem. Set in spectacular parklands overlooking the Irish Sea with a magnificent view of the Mourne Mountains. As well as the castle, the demesne features a walled and rose garden both of which present an orderly profusion of colour. Ardgillan Castle and Demesne is situated in North County Dublin on an elevated coastline between Balbriggan and Skerries,32 kilometers north of Dublin City. The demesne is well signposted off the M1. The park consists of 194 acres of rolling open grassland, mixed woodland and gardens, overlooking the Irish Sea with views of Mourne Mountains to the north and Lambay to the south-east. Ardgillan is a sanctuary for many species of animals, mammals and birds for which the wooded areas provide a safe retreat from surrounding agricultural land. Today the demesne is a stunning visitor attraction with a range of facilities the public can avail of, including castle tours, theatre events, afternoon tea, children's parties plus much more!

Spent a morning on the grounds of Ardgillan Castle and if the kids didn't need to nap, I would have spent the day. Beautifully kept grounds, gorgeous flowers, pleasant woodland walk, super playground, stunning sea views. The tearoom/cafe was a little disappointing but served a great cup of tea. Overall, highly recommend and we will return!

Swords Castle

Reviewed By lorcanireland2020

Ruined by an industrial walk way around the internal walls signed off by the Office of Public Works and LCC costing a small fortune of tax payers money(millions) and installed by engineers who got the measurements wrong and is only accessible on half the internal wall.(they fecked up) Brown envelopes no doubt involved ! This is a crying shame and has ruined the appearance and this magnificent Palace where the Bishop of Dublin resided many moons ago. Should be removed , money repaid, metal walk way removed and a wooden structure should be installed in its place...this attempt to marry the old with the new does not work at all! IT'S DREADFUL!
