Never again

We are sorry to see this nice place going downhill so much that despite staying here many times before Brexit and the pandemic we have now decided to never come back again. We have booked a Family arrangement for an overnight stay for us, our daughter and our 6 years old grandson; while our daughter has participated at a dinner at the University. What we got (for £163!) was an 18m2 room with a double bed and a sofa bed; with only one single armchair and a half-broken chair. Nothing else would have fit in anyway, as there was hardly enough place to move around the beds as it was. Not an accommodation we would have accepted even if it was cheaper. When we complained we have faced the owner who’s rudeness was then echoed by an unpleasant woman in the reception - telling us what we should have done to get another room - rather than being sympathetic, supportive and apologise for the arrangements. It is hard to believe that people with such an attitude towards their “guests” are allowed to operate in the hospitality business! The building and the surrounding is great, so one might appreciate such a rural option when staying in Cambridge - despite the lack of breakfast or even a functioning fridge in the room - were the service human at all.

Disappointed

Reviewed By morganski2

After reading lots of reviews about this place. We decided to book for 1 night. Our room was tiny, up a steep narrow staircase, it appeared clean. However, my husband was scolded using the shower in the morning. There was evidence of incomplete bathroom cleaning, the sink had hairs around it. The bottled soap dispenser was not clean. The bed sheets had not been ironed! When we saw the breakfast room, we decided not to have breakfast. This was definitely not value for money.

No friendly staff!

Reviewed By 431freddiek

As we arrived we realised that there was NO WHERE to park. We had an email the day before stating there was parking out the front (pay and display) which there was but only for 2 hours... so it took us a good 30 minutes driving around looking for a space down a side road! The room was ok, clean and tidy. Sink in the bathroom was tiny, had to put the kettle under the shower to fill it up! The duvet was thin as paper and the pillows lumpy... We had a room at the back and noise doesn't really bother us so we knew the beer garden would be noisy till around 11 - closing time. However, we think there was a lock in as around 12.30/1 there was people back in the beer garden outside our window smoking and chatting away for a while which was pretty annoying. Upon check out, who ever the bar staff member was see us waiting at the bar to hand the keys back, she was on the phone with her ear phones in. Slowly strolled over still talking on the phone, basically took the keys and said thanks. Didn't even ask if all was ok. Safe to stay we won't be staying again, the last part really topped it off.

NOT WORTH THE MONEY. Bad pillows and grumpy over zealous owner

Reviewed By Chlottie1

Don’t do it. You’ll sleep badly, the pillows are dreadful, you’ll have to take your shoes off in the house but walk through a kitchen and bathroom ( bad shower, old caste away mouldy toiletries) and it smells of cats or cheap room spray. The owner is grumpy. Faulty towers would have been more fun. It’s frankly post pandemic far too expensive for what it is.

I had a wonderful stay at The Orlando. Room 1 was spacious, clean and nicely furnished. Codes to get into the building/room worked perfectly. Great location for exploring Cambridge. Shower was hot and had good pressure. There is not so much privacy with the bathrooms frosted glass but this was not a problem for us. Host was very quick to respond! I was even able to leave my luggage in a locker after check out! I will be back!

Fabulous place

Reviewed By Paula S

Visited with my husband for 1 night, to see the sights of Cambridge. We were greeted by the lovely Anita and Toby the dog who is the most friendly pooch and just wants you to play with him. We had a lovely en-suite room at the front of the house, it’s quite a busy road, but Anita did warn us about the traffic and very thoughtfully provided us with ear plugs. This fab B&B is just a 20 min walk into the town centre. Anita gave us a map of town and pointed out some routes to take through the park etc. Breakfast was just amazing, all freshly cooked to order and well worth the wait, plenty of choice of cereals and fruit, yogurt to choose from. In short this place is THE place to stay if you’re in Cambridge.

4.5 stars! A wonderful holiday in Cambridge

Reviewed By JFrancaise

We had a wonderful stay at Acorn Guest House. Greeted upon arrival and given the room for the time we had requested. The room was clean, spacious and cosy for the 3 nights we stayed in the city. The bed was extremely comfortable and far better than other 5 star hotels I had stayed in! The room was cleaned and the bed was made every day and the bathroom was in a good condition. We were given towels and a hairdryer. The owners immediately found me a fan on request and kindly allowed us to store our bags at the hotel when we wanted to go out for the day that we checked out. We felt very welcomed and found it was extremely affordable for our budgets and would love to stay again. It felt very covid safe with handsanizer and wipes straight at the door. Our room was in the main house and on the front. At first I was worried we would hear the road outside but it was perfectly fine and we had some fantastic nights of restful sleep. The hotel is a good 20-30 minute walk into the centre of town along the river or taking the roads. It is a little far our from the station 30-40 mins by foot so we took a taxi on the way back (6 minutes in a cab). We believe this is more of a 4.5 hotel than a 4, with only tiny (and maybe even slightly picky) improvements being bigger bath towels for the shower as they didn’t seem to wrap round us enough, and potentially some more tea choices or light breakfast options like croissants (we loved the small packets of free biscuits with a tea). We really hope we can come and stay again and we look forward to when the breakfasts come back when things are a little safer. A massive thank you to the wonderful family who own this hotel for all your help and a fantastic stay in Cambridge.
