During the Great War, Vignacourt was used for French and Allied logistics. Louis and Antoinette Thuillier began taking photographs of the soldiers of different nationalities. 4000 photographic plates were discovered. Vignacourt 14-18 welcomes you to the Thuillier's renovated farmhouse which is devoted to their photograph collection. This exhibition tells the story behind the lines.

Staying locally and looking to visit WW1 sites. Found this "new" museum by accident.. We were the only visitors a the time and the curator, gave us her time telling about the couple who took the photographs of the soldiers on display, and how the collection remained undiscovered for decades. Turned out she was directly related to the family. The displays of photographs are magnificent, and they have managed to trace some of the soldiers in the photographs giving you that sense of connection with the past. The interactive displays are brillant. If you are in the area, go and visit, you will find it truely moving.

Le Domaine de Chantilly s'etend sur 7 800 hectares au sein de l'une des plus grandes forets des environs de Paris. Le parc offre quant a lui un panorama grandiose de l'art du jardin occidental : jardin a la francaise dessine par Le Notre au XVIIe siecle, le Hameau qui inspira Marie-Antoinette, le jardin anglo-chinois du XVIIIe siecle, et le jardin anglais du XIXe siecle.

A short rail trip from Pairs, Chantilly offers so much but doesn't suffer from the crowds at the more famous attractions. The Chateau is stunning. The excellent free audio guide offers a fantastic tour allowing a deep insight into life in the Chateau and an appreciation of the exceptional art collection. The Psyche windows are amazing. The gardens are huge and offer something for everyone. Take your time and soak them up. Finally, the stables are breathtaking and highlight the opulence of the time.

This local museum professionally displays archaeology finds in Senlis and the surrounding area. Pre-Roman, Ronan, Byzantine, medieval. Walls, statues, personal items in a chronological order. The art collection is wonderful. Great for a hour or two visit. The small admission fee includes two other museums within 2 blocks.

There is an excellent exhibition called "The history of the world in 100 objects from the British Museum" that will last until July. I was very impressed by this exhibition. The quality and importance of some of the objects is quite remarkable. Commentary is presented in French and English and it is an activity that you can do in one hour and half. The rest of the museum is Ok. It's strength is the Flemish painters (Rubens) and a large selection of sculptures. The neoclassical building is in a nice area of the city. On Saturdays there is a nice open air market behind the museum. Definitively, Valenciennes is a nice day trip from Lille.
