In the depths of the campus of the University of East Anglia, there is a very stylish building which combines university art library, with a gallery of modern art, ceramics and sculpture and the biggest cabinet of curiosities you could find. The collection of ethnic artefacts is amazing, and the antiquity of some of them is stunning.

Mid Suffolk Light Railway Museum

Located in the heart of the countryside, the Mid-Suffolk Light Railway Museum is Suffolk's only standard gauge steam railway. Known locally as the 'Middy', this quaint little line running from Haughley to Laxfield opened in 1904, firstly for freight and later for passengers. The line closed in 1952 and the track was lifted; however in the early 1990's a group of enthusiasts decided to revive this forgotten piece of Suffolk history, firstly as a museum and later by adding a demonstration line for visitors to experience rural travel on vintage trains. The work of the museum was recognised when the Middy was declared the winner of the Suffolk Museum of the Year Award for 2014. Today the Mid-Suffolk Light Railway Museum is a registered charity and while the museum may be small, visitors can look forward to a big welcome from our voluntary staff. Upon purchasing your ticket you are able to ride the trains as many times as you wish, and being a season ticket this also allows you to return free of charge throughout the year (except special events days). We have a well-stocked shop, real ale bar, and tearoom serving beverages, home-made cakes and hot snacks. We look forward to welcoming you to the Middy very soon, for more details about our events and opening times.

Ok, so the line is quite short (400m) but they are working on an extension which will more than double this. The authenticity and light railway atmosphere are what impressed me most. The 4 wheel coaches with wooden seats, the small locos and other rolling stock, etc. The buildings and platform furniture all add to the experience. The staff are all friendly and helpful and obviously enjoy being there. The cafe was good and the museum, although small, informative and worth seeing. A very nice informal atmosphere and it is possible to visit all areas, including workshops. I look forward to a return visit and maybe 'mixed' trains one day!

True's Yard Fisherfolk Museum

We spent a couple of hours wandering around the displays in the excellent small museum that gives a flavour of not only of the town of Lynn but also the busy thriving fishing and trading port in the days of the past. Do ask directions to the North End as it's well worth a visit and we recommend this hidden gem.

Peter Coke Shell Gallery

The Shell Gallery is temporarily closed. Normally run by volunteers, the gallery is beautiful and has some sublime pieces of work it will only take 5-10 minutes to look round but is located in a beautiful town right on a beautiful beach and seafront and is more than worth seeing whilst you enjoy the rest of the beauty of Sheringham which this only adds to!

Reviewed By HBB85 - West Sussex, United Kingdom

The shell gallery is situated between the town and the seafront, with car parking a short walk away. The gallery itself is a single room displaying a lifetime's work - which has been thoughtfully displayed in mirrored cabinets - and Coke's workshop in the corner, arranged as he left it. Entry is free but do make a donation towards its upkeep if you can. The gallery is run by friendly volunteers who will give you a leaflet about Peter Coke and his work and chat further if you so wish. We stayed about 15 or 20 minutes to take in all the intricate detail. It's great that the gallery has survived; many of the shell gardens of the 1970s/1980s are long since demolished. Coke's work is so ornate, it must have been a labour of love just searching for so many of the same type of shell! The detail is minuscule, so look closely. There are too many designs to name, all equally impressive. Everyone will have a favourite piece!

Norfolk Tank Museum

Open Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday Easter to October

Reviewed By X5066DErichardp - Dereham, United Kingdom

Visited on Sunday as part of a large group, having read previous reviews we were a bit apprehensive about what we would find. Glad to say the we found the poor reviews far from the truth. From the start we were made to feel very welcome. It's obvious that a lot of work has been done to comply with covid restrictions so sadly we weren't able to climb inside the exhibits. This did not detract in any way from our experience. All the staff were friendly and knowledgeable, and were on hand to answer any questions. This museum has something for everyone young and old and we will definitely be returning. Hopefully next time the restrictions will have been lifted and we can have a ride too ????????????
