Ouvert en 1989 à Bègles, banlieue proche de Bordeaux, à l’initiative de Noël Mamère et de Gérard Sendrey, le Site de la Création Franche, devenu Musée municipal en 1996, prospecte les territoires de l’art brut, de l’art populaire et de l’art naïf. Il héberge la Collection Création Franche riche de 16.000 œuvres. Lieu très actif, le musée de la Création Franche propose 10 expositions par an, dont l’exposition collective internationale Visions et Créations Dissidentes, rendez-vous prisé des amateurs et collectionneurs, qui présente chaque année huit nouveaux créateurs. Outre les expositions personnelles ou collectives, différents rendez-vous périphériques en rythment la programmation : rencontres-débats, journées d’étude, animations pluridisciplinaires. Parallèlement, le musée de la Création franche développe une petite activité éditoriale et publie notamment la revue Création Franche diffusée par abonnement. Il est actuellement dirigé par Pascal Rigeade.
