10 Archaeology Tours in Transylvania That You Shouldn't Miss

January 6, 2022 Nicolette Lion

Transylvania is a historical region in today's central Romania. Bound on the east and south by its natural borders, the Carpathian mountain range, historical Transylvania extended westward to the Apuseni Mountains. The term sometimes encompasses not only Transylvania proper, but also the historical regions of Crișana and Maramureș, and occasionally the Romanian part of Banat.

I connected with Secret Romania thru trip.me. Florin and I worked together to put together a 9 day trip with a driver/tour guide. Florin was so easy to work with. He accommodated everything I asked for. He responded so quickly when I sent emails even though we are 10 hours apart. He picked us up from the airport and took us to get something to eat before we settled into our hotel. In the morning we met our tour guide Ana. She was amazing! We drove around the country together for 9 days. She knew the history of everything, wherever we went. She even added a few off the beaten path stops that most people never see. She was so friendly, funny and happy. We had a trip that was far greater than we ever expected! We have traveled a lot, but must say this was one of our favorite trips! I highly recommend Romania and without reservation I highly suggest Florin, Ana and Secret Romania if you are going there. Many of our friends have put this on their bucket list after seeing all our pictures. I told them Secret Romania and Florin Preda are the only way to go!! Cant say enough great things about them. Just trust me! Use them!

Seen many archaeological sites in Europe? Ours are different. You will be surprised to find out that Romania has a lot to offer on this, as its area was inhabited more than 2000 years ago by a civilization, that was, at some point, feared even by the mighty Roman Empire and finally conquered by it in 106. The Dacians, but also the Romans built significant cities in fortresses and their ruins are still visible. But why are they different from other ancient ruins? It is because the Dacians were building in the mountains and on high hills, so simply going to the fortress will give you amazing views of one of the most wild area of Carpathians - Orastie Mountains. The trip is our favorite package as it combines history and trips in nature, all of them surprising. In summer, in the area of the fortresses, there are many reenactment festivals. If the trip takes place during the event, you can also witness reenactments, old Dacian crafts and objects.

What a great way to see the rest of Transilvania. We got picked up early by our guide Claudu who has some amazing life stories to tell you. Claudu is very knowledgable about the locations he takes you and Claudu also has a passion for cars so if your a car person Claudu is your man. Our First stop was to Sighisora. The views and scenery on the way are amazing as well as the history of some of the small towns you pass. Once in Sighisora be prepared to walk up a lot of stairs but at the top the views are spectacular. Now for you Dracula fans you can also see the house of where Vlad the impaler was born. Our second stop was Sibiu once again the drive and views are spectacular. Once there you can navigate yourself around easily to all the good spots. I highly recommend climbing over 200 steps to get to the top of the steeple to see a view of the entire city. Book yourself this trip it’s a must
