10 Archaeology Tours in Split That You Shouldn't Miss

September 22, 2021 Marianna Hollaway

The largest city on the Adriatic Coast, seaside delight Split has been under Roman, Venetian, Austrian, French, Italian and Yugoslav control. There is an abundance of restaurants and wine cellars. Sites such as Diocletian's Palace and Mausoleum, the Grgur Ninski Statue and the Cathedral and Bell Tower of St. Domnius justify its position as a UNESCO-designated World Heritage Site. The city's coves offer several lovely beaches, including central Bacvice. Ferries link Split to Dalmatian summer resorts.

We contacted Frane regarding a tour of Trogir and Salona's amphitheater. We asked if he would include the Archeological museum and he happily agreed. Tour started with a extensive tour of Dionician's Palace, then the Archeological museum, Trogir and Salona Amphitheater. Frane is very passionate about his country, it's history and life in general. He has a great personality and you won't go wrong if you hire him. He was also gracious enough to recommend restaurants and share places to see in other cities we were going to visit even though he had would not be our guide.

Tour starts by the scaled model of Split old town at Riva promenade, followed by visiting Diocletian's Palace and it's main parts: substructures, former imperial residence, Peristyle square with the Saint Domnio's Cathedral, and all four gates of the Palace. This is one of very few children-friendly tours. I will give you an insight to historic attractions in more simple and children-suitable way, with stories and legends connected with Split. We will look for ancient hidden wall inscriptions and Egyptian sphinxes, pass through Roman gates, make a wish by rubbing a toe of Bishop Grgur's giant statue. At the end, we will visit the oldest pastry shop in Split, tasting traditional homemade style treats. If needed, we can take a break for bathroom or drink. Two hour length of the tour is not strict, if needed it can be extended. Time and day of tour can be negotiated, depending on other tours that day

Inclusions: At the end of the tour children will get a pastry from the oldest pastry shop in Split, Diocletian's Palace Basements tickets

I visited Croatia after my mom died. She had always wanted to go, but the timing was never right for either of us to go together. So I went. What an extraordinary vacation I had. One of the highlights was my tour guide Ivica. Ivica and his family and his family’s family have lived in Split since...well it seems like before the age of time. He has stories. So incredibly knowledgeable and funny, and personable. I highly recommend him as a tour guide!
