A pleasant stay

Stayed for a week with my husband and another couple. Lovely staff, very welcoming. Perfect location. Couple of mins stroll to a gorgeous stretch of golden beach. Shops and Tavernas nearby. Pool clean. Loungers a bit worn and uncomfortable. Food pretty good but not very warm on several occasions. Puddings disappointing, only fruit available was kiwi, orange and apple slices. Would have loved done grapes or melon. All inclusive drinks stop at 11pm. Had a bit of a run in with Stef the barman on our first full day. We had been out in the resort since an early breakfast. Arrived back at 10:40pm and 3 of our group tried to order a round of drinks for the 4 of us. He was happy to give one drink each, was stroppy about us asking for a 2nd drink and refused a 3rd drink. Now I get that he can't have everyone stocking up on loads of drinks just before the 11pm cut off and I agree with this but bearing in mind we'd not used any of the all inclusive food or drinks in the past 12 hours I thought this was very unreasonable. . .but it really was his unprofessional, stroppy, rude manner in dealing with us that really shocked us. I think he might have had 2nd thoughts and maybe felt guilty about it because a short time later he came over and slammed another round of drinks down on our table. No smile, no apology. Anyway, the following day our husbands and to make the peace with him and apologise and he apologised too. All was fine after that, it didn't ruin our holiday but did leave a sour note. Would we go back again?? It's a really decent hotel and lovely location. I am not a fan of all inclusive though and there were hardly any UK people there. Mainly German I think, who weren't the friendliest and seemed to get preferential treatment with table service when the outdoor entertainment was on one night. We seemed to be the only people not getting offered table service for some reason? We probably wouldn't go back but others do and I can see why they have a really nice time.

Outstanding in every way

Our 3rd visit to this anazing hotel in 3 years as Covid as permitted and good to see that previous exemplary standards have been well maintained . We had a standard double room with a large balcony, beautifully cleaned and maintained throughout our stay, fresh towels and bedding every day . The site is large with beautiful gardens and always so clean. All the staff without exception are pleasant helpful and so professional. The food in the main buffet restaurant consistently excellent, i am a fussy eater and a none meat eater and ate very well every night, excellent range of food each night, super fruit, salads and pastries and always a rice and pasta dish . Breakfast also great, and the fresh cook pastries, pancakes and croissants were lovely. The private beach just across the road from the hotel is a lovely bonus. Never a problem getting a sunbed. Already booked for 2 weeks next year. Outstanding hotel

Great wee 4 night break

Reviewed By GillianJ254

Booked this hotel last minute to get some sun. The pool areas did not disappoint, the slides were great fun. Room was clean but basic but had everything we needed. Restaurant was busy, would have been nice to have fresh fruit at the breakfast sitting, it was available at lunchtime. Food could have been warmer was my only criticism. Also other 4 stars you have been able to get fresh omelettes but didn’t here, they do have the space to do so. Never had an issue getting a table and always found plenty to eat at other meal sittings. Asian restaurant you get one booking, very good food. The street food was amazing from 12-6, had something each day. Cocktails were lovely but not the strongest, however it would be nice to have a proper glass instead of plastic in the evening. Entertainment very good. All in all great trip and I would return.

We stayed for 2 weeks in May, we had a fantastic room in the main part of the hotel, with a pool/beach view. Every where was spotless and food was lovely. Aircon was centrally controlled and needed to be turned on much earlier, temperatures were hitting 30 but hotel didn't activate till 2 days before we left on the 26th and even then it was hardly noticeable. Staff were always lovely especially the bar and restaurant staff no matter how busy they were they always had time for a smile and a chat. A big shout out to Stelios in reception and Stelios at the pool bar, nothing was too much trouble, both really nice guys!! As others have mentioned the lookea animation team had no time for anyone who wasn't french, if you did not have a lookea red band, you didn't matter, the remarc team were totally different George, Jasmine, Olivia and Dorien were fantastic. The shows are the same each week, so if you stay 2 weeks then you will see the same ones again, don't attend the white party or comedy show if you are not french as no one speaks English and we had no idea what was going on but the dance and acrobat shows are worth attending, i would suggest someone who speaks English is also present on these nights. We had a fabulous 2 weeks and would definitely return.

Most definitely not a 4 star hotel 3 star and that is at a push no snack bar throughout the day no cocktails the food also wasn’t the worst but there is big room for improvement. The swimming pool is ok but not the biggest and very limited for small children to get a sun lounger you need to put your towels on them early hours in the morning. Now to the hotel rooms the air con does not work so at night it’s absolutely red hot the bed we got was one of the worst beds I’ve ever slept on sunk in and springs bulging out of the mattress the shower was very small and bathroom also stunk, woke up with about mosquito bites each morning too. Also the public toilets need more seeing to as they are absolutely discusting…The staff apart from the manager which seems to be quite rude really make this hotel especially benny and the girls who run the kitchen/bar without them the stay would just be horrendous. Bar could also do with opening earlier than 11 the way the hotel is run is quite strange. Positive things are there is a beautiful beach across the road from the hotel which offers free sun loungers good shops and amazing restaurants around a 15 minute drive from the airport… over all I would return to Crete and Gouves but would not stay in this hotel agian.

Lovely stay, would definitely return

Reviewed By georgief966

Me and my partner have just returned from a weeks stay at this hotel and we had the most amazing time. When we first arrived it was late, around half past midnight, unfortunately, the night staff on reception didn’t quite know what he was doing but nevertheless, he got us checked into our room, sorted the hire of the safe which, is 3euro a night and that was that. We had booked a room with a swim up shared pool however, the room we were given had a private plunge pool (not the end of the world, the hotel staff seemed to think this room was superior however, it was not what a booked but we stayed anyway) The room was clean, great shower, cleaning service was every day, it was lovely. CONS - Buffet food, no matter how early you got there, was always cold. for this reason we ate out a lot. - Pool bar alcoholic drinks were really watered down. - Before arriving, I was told we could have late checkout on our last day, the person on messenger said we could have the room until 9pm for 40euro and said to pay when we arrived. When we arrived, I explained this and they said no we cannot do that, you have to come back the day before to see if your room is available. This was disappointing and a worry for me) Anyway, I did what they said and when I went back, they told me it was 40euro until 6pm or 80euro until 9pm! I told them this wasn’t what I was told, showed them the chat and they honoured my 40euro however, I only had the room until 7pm. - There were no leaflets in reception (possibly due to COVID) but I felt like there wasn’t enough information available to me - The hotel has soooo many facilities and I feel guests could benefit from maybe a map of the compound explaining where everything is and hat is available - Bus stop was about a 20 minute walk away, we were told no more than 5! PROS - Fantastically clean hotel - Albeit cold, the food was delicious - Live food cooking outside in the restaurant - Indoor pool area was lovely and quiet - Location was great, down the road there are 3 supermarkets, shipshape bars, cocktail bars and restaurants (Lamanaki’s is definitely one to try) - Bus to town was 2euro each single trip - Local beach was lovely - Staff were friendly - No need to reserve sun beds there were plenty (e did go at the beginning of the season though) - Room came with mini fridge and air con Overall we had a fantastic stay, we would definitely go back! I haven’t pointed out the negatives in this review to be difficult and make it seem like it isn’t great, because it was. These were just my experiences, everyone is different. Thank you St Constantin Hotel :)

Where to start..

Reviewed By SimeonHockley95

What you get with Despo is what you pay for. It's cheap. I should start by saying that I was with a friend and we weren't looking for the ritz. We were looking for cheap and cheerful all inclusive and that was what we got. However, we have been on similar holidays before and this doesn't stack up against them. The food is simply utterly terrible and we didn't eat there most days as a result. Luckily down the road. there are a myriad of restaurants, bars that serve traditional greek food. Why the hotel at Despo couldn't put on some gryos or Souvlaki at any point, is beyond me but the food was shockingly bad. The bar wasn't much better. The drinks range was very basic, there were no cocktails in the evenings. Granted i'm difficult but i was limited by not liking Raki or Beer. There was at least ouzo. The bar man was rude and insisted that you had finished your drink before you could get another one, even if you were getting a drink for a friend to save you all queuing! I saw him quarrelling and telling off with other members of staff and generally got the vibe that none of the staff wanted to be there. Fortunately there were a number of enjoyable bars that were within walking distance. The pool was good, but there was an incident that was rather poorly handled. Somehow, someone had had an accident in the pool, and the staff dully fished it out with a fishing rod. This in itself wasn't so bad, but it was the fact that they paraded it around the communal area before depositing it in the bushes for all the guests to see, without making any effort to hide it away. Furthermore, they did nothing with the pool, not closing it nor even adding some chorine to disinfect it. In fact they just went back to bartending as if nothing had happened. Whilst this gave rise to a very funny moment when one of the oblivious german lads staying at the hotel dived in with the encouragement of his friends. Hilarious to watch but not very hygienic. The rooms were very basic, no problems there but the fact that they charge for AC was a bit concerning. The only saving grace was that I met a bunch of other guests who were lovely. Fortunately, I was able to make friends with a number of them which lead to excursions and meals out etc. The younger members of Staff were also excellent. Dimitri and George in particular were exceptionally helpful, and were welcoming to us. They stopped for chats and told us about the Greek culture and life on the island. Between them and the other guests, they made the holiday a pleasant experience overall. Despos are lucky to have them covering their backs.
