An Bord

Reviewed By mozarthill - Fort Hood, Texas

Spending the week in windswept Wilhelmshaven has been an interesting adventure. The cuisine here is so different from Southern Germany. Fish, fish, everywhere! My mother and I celebrated her birthday at the An Bord this week and I have to say that it was quite good! The outside of the building is welcoming, with the menu posted outside the door. Inside the bar that is situated in the middle of the room is in the shape of a ship's bow, complete with the ornamental topless woman. The entire restaurant is decorated tastefully in an understated nautical theme. The menu was large but not overwhelming. We decided to start the evening with an appetizer to share. We chose the shrimp in garlic butter. Before the appetizer was served, we were brought a small "welcome" from the kitchen. Not being a food critic, I am not sure what the "proper" name of the dish would be called...but it had the consistency of panna cotta, but was made with Kohlrabi (German turnip) and had a small dollop of chili sauce on top. It was quite flavorful and we both enjoyed it. We were then served our shrimp skewers. Although we were splitting an appetizer, the kitchen tastefully put one skewer and a small salad on two seperate plates for us. The shrimp and garlic butter were great, not overcooked, and had a nice flavor. The salad was crisp and the DRESSING was fantastic! We then ordered the Fish Platter for two. It was enormous! We were served four different types of fish (Zander, Salmon, Rotbarsch, and sadly I cannot remember the last) along with 4 large prawns and two miniature lobsters. Along with this was a medley of steamed vegetables and fried potatoes. There were three sauces that came with the platter for the fish (and veggies too, I suppose!) which were a Mustard Dill sauce, a Hollandaise sauce, and then a red sauce (which resembled a ketchup mayo mix). I liked everything except the red dipping sauce. It was really just bland and had no particular flavor. I think if they put a dash of chili sauce in it, it would be great! For dessert I had the Creme Brulee, which had been prepared ahead of time and tasted fine. The price for our entire meal, including 3 beers, 1 house wine (a Merlot that tasted fine), a Mineral Water, and a Cuppucino came to 64 Euro. This is a great restaurant for the town of Wilhelmshaven. I really enjoyed myself and liked the food!

Directly opposite the Columbia hotel this unassuming little pub was great with good robust food, charming service and an intimate and cosy atmosphere. The food was great (Schnitzel & seafood) and pre-empted with a "freebie" mixed salad which was delicious. It seemed to cater for locals which is always a good sign. If you're looking for something a little more real than eating in a hotel restaurant, this great little place immediately opposite is perfect. And dogs are welcome!

The restaurant is located far (approx. 4km) from the center of town, but in the midst of beuatiful locks and harbors. From the outside Terrace and the cosy dining room guests enjoy a magnificent view of the old port and a cast iron bridge. The menu is tradional with obviously a lot of choice in seafood. The quality of the ingredients and preparation of the food is good. Nevertheless, we got somewhat disappointed with the dish with coquilles st jacques. It is one of the most expensive dishes on the menu. As the accompanying shrimp were missing in the kitchen at the end of the day (can sometimes happen), this loss in the dish would be 'compensated' with extra scallops. But even under these special circumstances, the kitchen produced a dish with no more than four coquilles st jacques!

Very good restaurant in Wilhelmshaven.
Nice dishes, recommended the fish.
The presentation of the dishes is also very good.
They have some good wines too.
In summer is really nice because it has also some tables outside on the dock.
Book it! Otherwise much likely you won't find a table!

I have been to this restaurant twice and both times were good. They have a very extensive menu with pizzas, soups, salads, and pasta. The restaurant is a little more than casual, but you will be fine if dressed down.
The wait staff knows a little bit of english, but your best bet is to know the basic ingredients of pizza to help you through it. The pizza was about 14 inches and was cooked very well. You get served bread with olive oil and balsamic vinegar.
This is the best italian place I've found in Wilhelmshaven (Don't go to the one right across from the mall next to the Eis shop, GROSS)

We were staying one night in Wilhemshaven and jumped in a taxi and asked the driver to take us to a good restaurant. He dropped us at Patron where we had a lovely meal, the staff were excellent and the place is obviously popular with locals and tourists alike as it was busy but that did not effect our experience . We had soup starters and fish mains, mmmm lovely

Had a fantastic meal here, great selection on the menu.
They didn't have an English menu which is a bit of an issue for me but one of the group was German and could translate.
Well worth a visit and we are going again next week!
The building is very nice too..

Having a reservation, we went there in the early hours of the evening for dinner.
The place has nice interior and we felt welcome. But service is very slow. It took a while to order drinks, then to order food. The food also took a while, which was hard on the kids.
Once the food was there, the quality of the steak was fine.
