Booked the early bird offer which you get if you are on the 1861 emailing list! £25 off your bill when you spend over £75 which we spend easily!! Looking back at reviews, which I often do, have to say glad I missed boobgate! Why oh why would you think it is acceptable to wear something which showed off your bra???? Beggars belief! Having been at a conference recently where a delegate who breast fed her baby, guess what? NO BRA on show!!! There has never been a dress code to my knowledge in 1861 possibly because diners just realise what is and is not appropriate! EG today was in shirt & shorts, partner in denim. Just beggars belief that you would think this is OK outside of a nightclub experience?Usual very warm, cordial wlecome from Kate! You know it's bad when you arrive there is a Malbec already poured! And a Cafetiere of coffee for my partner! There is something to be said about being a regular enough customer that the owner knows your favourite tipple! We have been eating here long enough to know the welcome is always consistent and it's not just our welcome, we naturally observe the welcome afforded to others. We opted for the wild garlic risotto and the broccoli soup, both well enjoyed! I wasn't expecting to see the the risotto on the menu and have the weather to thank for that! For mains we both had the fillet of steak rossini, cooked to perfection (although would suspect Simon would not agree with my medium to well done steak!!). An absolutely fab mains which we both enjoyed!Strangely enough when it came to the pudding, our choice was preempted! The platter was again the natural choice! Such a variety of tastes/textures - and 5 different puds to share! All in all, an excellent experience! Plan going forward is to sample the taster menu which some diners there highly recommended and to take our nephew and his wife with us!!

The Bell @ Skenfrith

Walked the Three Castles Route starting and ending in Skenfrith on a Thursday. Our intention was to have a meal at The Bell on completion. We did not book as we were not sure how long it would take to complete the 20 mile circuit (well worth doing if you are feeling fit).If we had read the reviews,(or done any research) we may have been a bit concerned about getting some food, but as luck would have it, when we turned up in our hiking gear we were welcomed and shown to a table, I had been visualising a Steak and Ale Pie, a mountain of chips and some mushy peas during our mammoth hike, but the menu was far more upmarket with prices to match. I ordered the pork and black pudding risotto which I must say was fantastic, as was the creme brûlée covered in fresh fruit I had for desert. They had a good selection of real ale, but as I was driving, I stuck to soda water which was priced very reasonably (some places rip you off for soft drinks).Staff were very pleasant. I would certainly recommend giving it a go, but reading some of the other reviews, I would be tempted to book in advance. I would probably dress a bit smarter too!

Lovely experience in the middle of nowhere. Initial wafer snack delivered massively more taste than an identical looking offering from Restaurant Gordon Ramsay later in the week. Other outstanding taste sensations from fermented carrot, black pudding, heritage tomatoes, dexter beef. Great job.
