Umhlanga is an affluent residential, commercial and resort town north of Durban on the coast of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. It is part of the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality, created in 2000, which includes the greater Durban area. (the correct pronunciation of "hl" in Umhlanga is similar to the Welsh "ll"), the name means "place of reeds" in the Zulu language. It is bordered by Durban North to the south and Mt Edgecombe to the west.

Apache river spur is our family venue of choice. We eat here at least 2 times a month. Huge play area makes this a fav with our under 6 year Olds. Breakfast is always excellent. Livers are a great addition to breakfast. The staff are super kid friendly and extremely accommodating. I was expecting something special based on previous reviews I had read. The ambiance was good, great location and good service. There was quite a strong smell of cleaning chemicals which seem to have been used to clean the floor which was off-putting on entry. The food was average, with the overall experience a little disappointing

So for my sister's birthday dinner this year we decided to visit Butcher Block in Umhlanga. What a wonderful ambiance, good service and amazing food!! The steaks are just great!! The décor is so beautiful and we had such a great evening! They even did a dessert with an happy birthday which made the night even more special.. will definitely be back soon :)Dear Nikita, we are absolutely delighted you enjoyed your evening! Hussar Grill 10/08/2019Went to Hussar Grill for lunch with family at Gateway. The restaurant was fairly empty and we could choose any seat. We perused the menu and firstly ordered drinks (my glass was dirty and I requested a clean one). We waited a long time for the drinks to arrive... Placed our food orders, and the waiting game began. Eventually our food arrive (Kingklip x2, Pork Belly and Fillet). I had the 600g pork belly, which was good but very rich for my palate. Well... where to start? After having to look for our booking in the book for about 10 mins, and questioning us whether we did actually make a booking, my wife, myself and some friends of ours were seated in their "Smoking Section" (which in reality is the sidewalk in Florida Road). We were greeted by our waiter (who never gave his name, most likely on purpose) whom I can only describe as inept. He did not know what beers were on offer, struggled to listen to his patrons, and made assumptions about what we were going to say before it came out of our mouths. We asked what IPA's they had on offer, he offered us a Castle Lite :/ After ordering our drinks, they came in drips and drabs... 1 drink at a time, and in total it took about 45 mins for all 4 of our drinks to eventually arrive... He then took our food orders, but to our disappointment, a few of the starters were not available... Which would have been fine if the waiter knew at the time of ordering whether they had stock or not.... but he didn't, and we only found out after 20 mins of waiting. Our starters eventually arrived, cold and tasteless... We would have left at that point if it were not having ordered mains, and them arriving about 30 seconds after our starters were finished... we decided to stay and eat them, even though we didn't have high hopes at this point. Needless to say, our disappointment was realised, as the food tasted like something from a much cheaper Apache themed restaurant.... The waiter then took another 45 mins to take our plates away and get us our bill... I don't even want to get into the details of the waiter ignoring us while he was flirting and sitting down at the table next to us... This was most likely the worst dining experience I've had in a very long time... I cannot and will not recommend this establishment to anyone...Dear Stefan, thank you for taking the time to do a review, your feedback is very valuable to us We are extremely disappointed to hear about your poor dining experience at our Butcher Block Branch in Florida Road. This most certainly is not up to our usual standards and I shall be addressing this with Store Management. Are you able to provide me with a few more details such as what day you went, what you ordered or your bill number so that we can find out who your waiter was. Did a Manager come and check on your table at any time? On behalf of Butcher Block I would like to offer our sincere apologies and would like to invite you back for a complimentary meal in the hope that you will give us the opportunity to redeem ourselves and give you the dining experience that we expect for all our customers. Ate here twice so can say food is good quality and tasty. Service friendly all be it a bit slow as it's so busy. In evening time more of a pub vibe than family dining but would definitely return if visiting without kids.

First time at this establishment and was not disappointed. My colleague and I both ordered fish - I had the Cape Salmon on vegetable noodles which my colleague had the Red Roman. Both were prepared to perfection. Waiter was attentive and the entire atmosphere in the restuarant was great. Tables are not too close to one another.The only slight disappointment was the wine selection.I would recommend this restuarant.

We only booked that morning for a large group of 12 but they were able to accommodate us. Despite the size of the group, the service was excellent and the meat was delicious. I had a meat sharing platter for two which was a delicious and more varied than it sounds. The whole group enjoyed meals across the menu and. All washed down with some red wine recommended by the waiter. Lovely ambiance, sitting upstairs on the balcony on a balmy spring evening. We had fantastic salads to start, and my wife's main course of seared tuna was delicious. Unfortunately my 400g rump was most disappointing. It was as if it had been cooked on a coldish grill. It was a bit grey and tough, not the seared outside and pink and juicy inside one expects. I ordered a pepper sauce which helped somewhat. This was a pity because overall the evening was great !
