Waggon and Horses

Small, friendly, community local pub serving good quality drinks and delicious home cooked food Tuesday to Saturday at lunchtimes and early evening and Sunday lunch.

Went to the Waggon and Horses with family for lunch after reading many excellent reviews about it. However our greeting upon entering wasn't overly friendly and we immediately felt somewhat uncomfortable. All of us ordered lasagne and chips; the lasagne was extremely greasy and the chips were significantly undercooked. Overall it wasn't a good experience and personally we won't be going back.

We have visited the Duke of William on several occasions before and never had any problems but on our last visit things were very different!Firstly the restaurant upstairs was empty when we arrived at 7pm on Friday 29th March, unusually unheard of on previous visits. We sat down and ordered our starters... so far so good. We ordered our mains and they were brought to our table in a timely manner, from then on it went downhill. 3 of our table of 8 had ordered the braised steak. Firstly my partner found a piece of plastic in his meal, he nearly swallowed it. We called the waitress over and she took the meal back to the kitchen, she returned a minute or 2 later and stated as if it was ok, that the plastic was from the packaging, my partner was offered another meal and chose the same with the reassurance there would be no plastic in it. Next my mum who has also had the braised steak found plastic in her meal too. Then to top it off, my brother in law found a bug/beetle inside the pastry on his pudding that he had ordered for his main meal. It was promptly returned to the kitchen and a replacement meal swiftly declined. We refused to order pudding due to the experience so can’t comment on them. We didn’t have to pay for the 3 meals fortunately but the meal which was for my sons 16th birthday was ruined. My mum did manage to get a look into the kitchen area and it looked dirty, such a shame as we have always enjoyed food here previously. We won’t be dining here again I’m afraid and I wouldn’t recommend anyone else does as I’m sure they would fail a food hygiene check as things stand.I have no complaints about the bar downstairs though, the ladies that serve are very pleasant and there is a great selection of drinks, defo drop in sort a drink but swerve the food!

I wrote a review after our first meal here a couple of years ago. I was impressed with the food then and have been back on many occasions now - the food and general ambience is consistently good. This is not pub grub. Eating at the Draycott Arms is dining out - really tasty, home-cooked food which is beautifully presented. As if that wasn't enough, they have good real ales and tasty wines. We'll just keep on returning!Thank you for your kind comments. Customers returning again and again is one of the biggest compliments we could have so we look forward to your next visit!

Went to lunch with a few ladies. Lovely country pub and restaurant, brilliant setting, ambiance and service. I had a chicken and bacon salad - absolutely gorgeous. Plenty of meat and an extensive tasty salad. My friends loved their meals too, proper chips (the best i’ve Ever tasted). I highly recommend this little gem.

Outstanding food with lovely decor and very comfortable surroundings. Me and my husband both had 2 courses and they were both exquisite. I had the haggis and black pudding stack to start which was stunning and my hubby had the homemade mushroom soup. For mains i had the chicken balmoral and my husband had the scampi. The staff were so helpful and friendly. We arrived early but we were seated straight away. It was a lovely meal. It was worth every penny. We are going back again next time with our daughter to try it.

Time to visit the Duke of York following their refurbishment earlier this year with our friends from Stafford. The main lounge has been updated and very nicely decorated. Our table was booked 'on-line" which was useful and all reserved when we arrived. They have a nice choice of menu from which we choose a main course and dessert. As on previous occasions, the quality of food and service was truly excellent.

Called in for an evening meal, the food was good, especially the steak pie. The service was a little slow but not a problem. On a personal note, I found the restaurant room a bit noisy even though only half occupied, it seems to echo. We will go in the bar next time as we have found that ok on past visits. Good value for money though.

The Royal Oak is clearly popular and they seem to have maximised the cover numbers within this extended village pub. Fine dining it isnt, but, that apart, it does what it sets out to do very well. We experienced some poetic licence with regard to "Steak weight" and with the degree of 'rarity' requested. However, nothing was un-enjoyable and given the price structurte no reason for us to complain. Service was prompt and courteous albeit sometimes 'curt'. Would we visit again?....probably not but dont let that deter you.Hello, Thank you for taking the time to write a review. Its nice to read that you see we do our own thing well regardless of if it was your cup or tea or not. As previous reviews and replies state we are a very busy great value pub and if it was fine dining or silver service you were after a more intimate dining destination would have been a more suitable choice. If its great value deals or well priced on trend foods in a nice countryside pub with efficient friendly staff I'm sure we would be a great option. As for the 'poetic licence' any comments or concerns could have been made aware to any of our staff working that evening or raised with the waiting on member who did the check back. I personally took your order that evening before expediting in the kitchen. Your meal was prepared and cooked as requested and i was happy with the meal sent, plates also came back empty. Kind regards, Andy
