Reviews on Pub food in Morelia, Michoacan, Mexico. Morelia (Spanish pronunciation: [moˈɾelja]; from 1545 to 1828 known as Valladolid) is a city and municipality in the north central part of the state of Michoacán in central Mexico. The city is in the Guayangareo Valley and is the capital and largest city of the state. The main pre-Hispanic cultures here were the Purépecha and the Matlatzinca, but no major cities were founded in the valley during this time. The Spanish took control of the area in the 1520s. The Spanish under Viceroy Antonio de Mendoza founded a settlement here in 1541 with the name of Valladolid, which became rival to the nearby city of Pátzcuaro for dominance in Michoacán. In 1580, this rivalry ended in Valladolid’s favor and it became the capital of the colonial province. After the Mexican War of Independence, the city was renamed Morelia in honor of José María Morelos, who hailed from the city. In 1991, the city was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its well-preserved colonial buildings and layout of the historic center.

This restaurant is in a lovely setting and it has a fine view of Morelia. The food was spotty with only a couple of dishes that one could call excellent. We all particularly liked the shrimp carpaccio which was one of the best starters any of us had ever experienced. The pasta dishes had pasta that was properly cooked but each of the three were done with spaghetti with no finesse in choosing the right pasta for each specific sauce. The “fetuccini Alfredo” has mixed with cotija” cheese and was a reinvention gone bad! I think the crema was Mexican crema, not cream. The sour cream flavor mixed with the cotija cheese tasted like a muddy mixture. We had ordered a particular white sparkling wine. And we were asked by the untrained waiter if we wanted it cold or at room temperature. ???? Duh! Sparkling wine at room remp, are you kidding??? Then we waited for 30 minutes or so while it was allegedly chilled. Then some manager came out and said we couldn’t have that bottle and that we had to have the rose version of the same cecause they couldn’t sell the white version at the menu price. So we waited another 30 minutes or so while they tried to chill the second bottle. Meanwhile our dinner was 2/3 over and we had no wine. So finally we cancelled the Rose and ordered the house white wine, which was sub standard at best and way over priced for the quality.Otherwise service was attentive and servers were plentiful. It is too bad they obviously had little training in fine dining. This place could be excellent with a manager that really had a training program to teach about wine service and a bit more finesse in the kitchen. I hope they do improve over time.

This classic of the city of Morelia, took a great step forward, with this terraza concept.Their menu is wider and at the same time familiar. The place is amazingly well located, you have a great view of the city no matter where they sit you.Definitely a good place to enjoy a beer and pick some decent snack. The only things to improve for now are 2 aspects: table waiting times and quantity of bathrooms, lines to wash your hands or take a relief are crazy.

El Campanario Cafe

Why is it a must? Since it is a roof top bar/restaurant, it is a great local to take in the views of the Cathedral and the Plaza de Armas as well as the rest of Centro with the mountains in the distance. I always take visitors to El Campanario. If you are looking for a light dinner or lunch, is a nice place as well. The crowd tends to be younger and it is quite a busy place. Sometimes service is slow when very busy. Great place to visit with friends and family and enjoy the views. Take a jacket with you - can get breezy and thus a little chilly. Food and service might be average, but the atmosphere and views are superior. The combination makes for a good time.
