The Pumphouse Bar & Grill

The Pumphouse has been here since 1978, and is one of the last "old style" (meaning not expensive or fancy) bars left in Bellevue. Somehow they've avoided the wrecking ball that has re-made the rest of downtown. They have great pub-style food, and usually pour at least 3 locally made craft beers. Big-screen TV's are showing whatever local team happens to be playing. It's a meeting spot for a lot of locals, so it's a pretty busy place, but I've always been able to get a table. Check it out!

We like to food here and the prices are decent. There is a good variety on the menus and the food is prepared well, the service is ok. They cater to a younger crowd, and the music is blaring, so patrons cannot eat and have a conversation. A little pet peeve, the waitress comes constantly to take plates, and clean up, leaving my wife, who eats a little slower, to be sitting eating all by her self.

I ordered Phad chicken. It was rancid, stinking and they made me pay for it. $13 for inedible food. The waiter blamed it on "a new chef who maybe cooks differently than I'm used to". Yes. Most definitely. I do not eat rancid food and the best thing they could have done was not charge me... but they did! Like unethical treatment and rancid food? Eat at Phat 12 on Mercer island. You won't be disappointed.

We went to Tavern Hall for a quick dinner in a place where they serve a wide variety. And Tavern Hall fulfills that requirement. Pretzels for starters plus burgers, grilled cheese sandwich and beef brisket sandwich as mains. The setting is fine, the service friendly, although hectic with the amount of customers. Unfortunately, the food needs improving. The pretzels were too salty as were the chips. The grilled cheese sandwich was OK as was the beef brisket sandwich. The burgers were nice. It was almost OK, but could be so much better.

Roanoke Inn

I know, the place is over a hundred years old and a fixture on Mercer Island, but to this off islander, it was sorta meh.Seating inside was dark and unappealing, and all the other customers were seated on the front deck, the open air side patio or in the back lawn area. The seats in the back had umbrellas to shield you from the sun...if it was overhead, but they didn't tilt to save you from being blinded by the dropping sun. It was pretty uncomfortable with no real option. Our server, Trish, was friendly and helpful and over stretched. She had a large circuit to cover and wasn't able to get to us nearly as soon or as often as we'd have liked.Food options were great, and everyone enjoyed their various choices, a burger, a couple of taco salads and a chicken Parmesan sandwich. Portions were good for the salads but the sandwich was small. Wine wasn't expensive. All in all, I'd pick another place before returning.
