Beautiful old building set in lovely grounds. Immaculate toilets and eating areas. We had booked for afternoon tea. Although the food was lovely it was not presented as an Afternoon Tea. The sandwiches were dainty and very tasty. However the accompanying cakes were shop bought and cut in half to give the impression of being smaller. The scones were rather large. China cups, saucers etc were really nice. Staff were very attentive. Would go back. Lunch perhaps.

Plenty of parking and once you get past the empty rooms at the front to the restaurant at the back it’s warm and welcoming. Staff were competent and pleasant. Service was a little slow at times because there was a group of 12 in at the same time but we didn’t mind - it’s understandable in a small hotel. The menu is pub classics with a Scottish theme. Portions were generous and the food was tasty, all appeared freshly cooked. Not sure why plastic straws are given in drinks without being asked for - the vast majority of establishments do their bit for the planet now and either have paper straws or just reactively issue plastic ones when requested by the customer. Saves them money too!Good value overall, and since it’s one of the few restaurants in the area that’s open on a Monday we will be back.

A quick two course lunch on a beautiful sunny Sunday afternoon. Ive been here a few times and absolutely loved it, however this time we were left disappointed. We had a main and desert. For the Malibu chicken curry, we had to ask for extra sauce as it was so dry. When deserts came, we ordered a fruit sponge pudding which came frozen, which when we asked later, was supposed to be warm with custard. As a replacement we got a warm chocolate cake with ice cream, yet again the cake was frozen. We were the only people in the restaurant, maybe due to the recent quality of the food, sorry would think twice about returning. Serving staff were very friendly and polite.

Local chef showed flashes of classical training - food very well presented and appealingly garnished. All food items prepared to taste as requested. Numerous visits to table by chef to insure satisfaction. Soups and stews were big hits - hearty, meaty, and hot. Great selection of beers.

We were staying in Sky Blue Cottage (a self-catering rental) just a couple of doors away and were recommended to book. The pub is cosy and very friendly. Not only did the landlord make us feel welcome, but so did everyone in the pub. We booked into the restaurant for our meal on the night we arrived (if I remember correctly they only do food over the week-end) and it was fabulous after a long journey to have a good choice of options and a warm, well cooked meal put in front of us.

We thought that the lunchtime menu had a reasonably wide selection of dishes and there were items available which were not often seen in the average local Hotels we visit in the area. My wife had the Chicken Stroganoff priced at £8.95 and I had the Fish Mornay at £10.95. Both dishes were cooked well and tasted good. A large glass of Chardonnay was £6.95 and a pint of cask ale was £4.15. The overall price of £31 is average for the area and the food was good for the price. The seating in the Bar area is uncomfortable, but there is a very good Dining room situated towards the back of the Hotel. We did book a room for a later visit in the month, but on arrival it didn't suit our needs. However, we cannot fault the food and drinks served at lunchtime. Many thanks for taking the time to review our restaurant at the Elphinstone. We try to cater for all tastes and I am delighted we have succeeded in your case. Our focus is on using quality Scottish ingredients whilst introducing a few different tastes where we can, at a price, we feel represents value for money.
