Where to eat Portuguese food in Sintra: The Best Restaurants and Bars

December 10, 2019 Sheron Bogner

Find out what Portuguese restaurants to try in Sintra. Long the home of Portugal’s monarchs, Sintra is a magnificent town of marvelous historic mansions, all set against the backdrop of lush hills. Sintra’s many castles include the Palácio Nacional de Sintra (a main abode of Portuguese royalty until the early 20th century), the hilltop and storybook Palácio da Pena, Quinta de Regaleira (incorporating several architectural styles and with gorgeous surrounding gardens), the Castelo dos Mouros (Moorish Castle), and the Palácio de Monserrate.

We were looking for a lunch place in the bustling historic centre of Sintra, a rabbit warren of winding laneways full of cafes and restaurants, when a pictorial menu caught our eye. Not your usual Portuguese and tourist fare. A few minutes later our group of 8 was seated on the tiny outdoor terrace ordering salads of salmon tartare with quinoa, fresh tuna or salmon, goats cheese, gorgeous platters of cheeses and meats, and toasted steak or tuna steak sandwiches. Fabulous, we all agreed it was the best lunch we had had in 2 weeks in Portugal. Great value, highly recommended.

I had passed at their door many times and finally decided to get in for lunch. It did not disapoint at all! We had traditional Portuguese pastéis de bacalhau (codfish fritters), which were fried to perfection, and chicken thigh stuffed with chestnust and grapes, with a side of creamed spinach and oven potatoes. Absolutely delicious! The portions were generous, too. For dessert we had tiramisu and red fruit pavlova, both amazing as well. The restaurant has a nice cosy atmosphere, making the whole experience a mix of traditional and modern, without letting you feeling to old to be hip! We loved it and can't wait to go back!

Wow.. totally delicious we were recommended by our host Rita to try this restaurant about a 10min walk from our AirBnB. Outstanding and truly delightful. It’s a tapas style menu which is outstanding. We had a dish called woodpecker which is fillet steak in the mist amazing sauce! Looks like a stew but it’s totally Not!! It’s amazing!!!! We also had a trilogy of the house which was nice and authentic to the area. I then had the best prawns I’ve ever had.. if I could have licked the bowl I would! Totally awesome!!! My partner had a meat dish which was like a steak sandwich and chips. We followed this with two delicious desserts. Plus lots of beer all for around 58 Euro. This place is a fantastic little gem and I wish we’d found it sooner! I highly recommend booking a table (our host booked one for us!) wow wow wow. Thank you for keeping things authentic and giving great advice on dishes! Next time we are here we will return! Muito obrigada!Gostamos de clientes Felizes.

Went here for breakfast for our last morning in sintra! Food was amazing and staff were really welcoming! The decor inside is really cute and has great artworks on the wall/quotes like 'no WiFi talk to each other' which was really nice and also sported the traditional yellow colours of sintra/Portugal! What a wonderful experience! We arrived early (7ish) and found the restaurant fully booked! They had a later reservation so they fit us in (we are prompt eaters). They were celebrating their first anniversary so we were treated to sparkling wine to start we had the sheep’s cheese course to start (6 slices of pungent cheese). We followed with grilled sea bass - delicate fillets as fresh as the ocean served with spinach and potato mash. A glass of house white (minerally and dry) to top it off. They have a small menu that allows the small kitchen to work efficiently. We’re in Sintra for a week and we’ll be back - it’s a value!

Absolutely Wonderful. We went for lunch after visiting Palace before Quinta da Regaleira (FUN). Bit difficult to find on phone navigation since it’s up a hill - kept telling us we’d arrived but kept walking in circles. Sweet little place with an excellent staff. While waiting a short time for a table got to see all the dishes coming out of the kitchen & knew what we wanted to order before looking at the menu. The two of us shared the spinach cream, cod soup & double mix plate (cod, octopus & shrimp over spinach & sweet potatoes) so fantastic. 40 € I think. Would go again in a second. Thanks denheinz for your comment and rating :)We are always very happy with the good comments we have received, as we feel rewarded for our work and this gives us motivation to improve so that our Customers can come back to visit us and be surprised.See you soon.Best regards.

It was like being invited to friends home for a special dinner. If you want to feel like you are appreciated as a guest come to Santo Bife. We are so sorry tomorrow is Sunday and they will be closed. Well deserving of the 5 out of 5 rating. Everyone who eats here says the same.
