'Special' should not mean either lax hygiene or disguised food past its prime. We both had the pork and slaw roll special and couple hours later violently ill with food poisoning all night. There was nothing else it could have been. My partner had commented on odd slaw whereas i thought gravy was bit strange. These guys need overhaul in food storage and prep. Eat at own risk.

We spotted this place at the end of Methven’s Main Street where most of the eateries seem to be. The pizza selection sounded good and they even had vegetarian one which our vegan daughter chose minus cheese. Our son had the beef burger. The final score was a United cereal 10 from the team. The base was thin and crunchy almost like a wood oven base. There was a good selection of topping including for the vegan one. Husband and wife team runner ng it were very warm and hospitable which made for a great night. We hadn’t expected such high quality in a small country town. Silly us!

Just enjoyed the Nessie burger....a real meal and so tasty! If you have worked up an appetite on the skifield or out tramping....order a Nessie and chips and you wont go hungry. Definitely the best burger Ive had....I struggle to choose between it and the chicken meal with salad and chips which is also excellent.Off for a lie down now!!

Called in as have dined here before. The lunchtime crowd was minimal (weekday) but the service was friendly and great. The menu was much more than your standard "deep-fried everything", with gluten free, dairy free and vegan choices available within a wide range of options. We both chose the seafood chowder. What a delight. A variety of seafoods in a creamy base, well balanced and served nicely hot with accompanying sourdough baguette. Service was timely, neither rushed nor tardy, and cheerful. Thoroughly enjoyable experience.Fantastic to hear. We are glad you enjoyed the chowder, a lot of effort was put into offering a tasty seafood chowder - which seems to be a rare thing in NZ !

We visited Methven for a short skiing trip and did not expect to find this wonderful dining experience in a small country town. After a long day skiing, a quick shower, it was so relaxing having a cocktail in the lounge area in the warmth (fireplace) and wonderful surrounding in the bar area of Shackleton’s, followed by a unique new “Ink Gin” which changes colour into a beautiful mauve once you add tonic. The menu offered a very decent variety in choice. My partner and I both started with the Tandorri prawns which were tasty and succulent with beautiful matching condiments. I proceeded to have the panseared scallops as a main, they were fresh and flavoursome. My partner was not disappointed with the Marino lamb rump, melt in your mouth and cooked to perfection. We finished sharing a devine cheese platter, watching a bit of rugby, and having a night cap whilst looking out to the beautiful snow covered mountains and scenery. The staff are attentive, friendly, unobtrusive, and have a sense of humour. The wine list has been well thought out and we were able to try something new and wonderful. We met some lovely local people who frequent this restaurant regularly, which is a good sign of quality. What a gem of a find right on our doorstep. Photos are view from bar and a spa after dinner. Thank you Shackleton‘s and your wonderful team for making our visit so enjoyable.

As we often do - we checked Trip Advisor and headed to the #1 cafe. We were surprised at the decor but thoroughly enjoyed our lunch. An interesting selection of ‘cabinet’ food (but not in a cabinet) as well as a menu. We opted for spinach and bacon grilled open sandwiches - they were delicious. Good coffee - I ordered a 2nd cup. Then we had to try the cakes a carrot cake and an apple and pear cake which were fresh and came with a large spoon of cream. Very friendly and helpful staff. Plenty of locals eating there. We enjoyed our lunch which at $43 wasn’t cheap - but was very good value. We would definitely go back.

This is a great restaurant that cannot be faulted, wonderful service and locally sourced food cooked with imagination and flair but without over complicating things. Generous portions, vegetarian and I think gluten free options available. Very good value for money and a good and interesting wine list. Great views from the restaurant of mount Hutt.comfortable and relaxed.combine with the hotel, Ski Time villas for a wonderful few days away in an unspoilt and relatively unknown part of New Zealand and yet only an hour from Christchurch airport
