Souvlaki

Souvalaki is a 2-store local (to Blacksburg and Radford) restaurant serving standard Greek comfort food in a college casual atmosphere. The Blacksburg locale has a counter and a few tables inside, plus a few tables on the sidewalk at the front of the restaurant where you can eat during good weather. A sign near the front of the restaurant reads, "The difference at Souvlaki is the table service. There ain't any."You place your order at the counter, then wait either at the counter or at a table for your order to be called. Ms. Squatch and I both ordered the Pita combo wrap, which includes both gyros and souvlaki. Our waitress, who looked like she may be a student at Virginia Tech, looked annoyed at having to take an order from a middle-aged woman and an AARP cryptid. We asked each other if we had violated a local custom, but couldn't identify any faux pas. Maybe it was the 1980s vintage music over the sound system. We liked it, but figured it may have annoyed our waitress. We shrugged and decided to enjoy the waitress' attitude as part of the atmosphere. It was a good decision. The food took a bit longer to arrive than we expected. It was worth the wait. Our pita pockets were spicy and delicious. Because it was the middle of the afternoon, we had ice tea to drink. If we were to return later in the day, we would have ordered beers from Souvlaki's impressive beer list. The list includes several good regional brews on tap, plus a well-curated selection of craft brews from around the country. We left with our appetites satisfied. We also left a good tip for our Surly Waitress. If we're in the vicinity, we'll go back to Souvalaki. We hope to get the same waitress and ask her if she's having a good day.

This started as a place for coffee, breakfast and pita sandwiches. Everything we've had here has been good. I read that they are closed for awhile and then will expand to include dinner. This is Egyptian and there are subtle differences between this and Greek. We like them both. The breakfast was tasty and a fun change.
