Where to Eat in Zagreb: The Best Restaurants and Bars

April 8, 2018 Tambra Mccollister

Zagreb got its start as two medieval fortress towns atop hills overlooking the Sava River, and was reborn in the Baroque period as center of business, perfectly located on routes connecting Central Europe to the Adriatic Sea. These days, Zagreb is the heart of contemporary Croatia’s culture, art, sports, and academics, but its history is not forgotten. The unique blend of medieval towers, 19th century palaces, open-air markets, and ancient cathedrals, make Zagreb the perfect city to explore.

There were six of us.
Not the easiest of restaurants to find as it is located in the basement of the Turkish Embassy buildings. The ambience was fine and bright. The staff were professional and generally friendly although at times they appeared aloof. I got the impression that they take customers for granted and pre-assess you on likely spend! The menu was extensive but the food itself didn’t come up to scratch in some instances. Pasta was dry and hard (beyond al dente) and the beef poorly cooked. Two of our party left their mains. Other dishes were fine and plentiful. All in all, it didn’t come up to expectations commensurate with the prices charged.

Service was friendly and efficient. Sommelier extremely knowledgeable about the (rather wonderful) local wines. Try the Tomas orange wine if you haven't already.
Cod tripe unusual and interesting. Tartare steak was done perfectly, the pomegranate dessert - featuring mousse, sorbet and sugared seeds - very interesting indeed. Compliments to the chef. The millie-feuille needs some work to take it up a notch or two.
It's not cheap but it's very good. Enjoy.

Le Bistro Esplanade

Le Bistro has a strong heritage and history as the city's culinary innovator. Opened in 1986, as a small French type of restaurant, Le Bistro immediately took an important place in the everyday life of the capital. It was the first restaurant with the glass roof. Le Bistro hostesses were the first in town to wear silk uniforms. Also, Le Bistro was the first place where wine and champagne were served per glass. It is interesting that Le Bistro first served little chocolate with the coffee, and in 1989 Le Bistro was the first place in Croatia to serve the famous Italian dessert tiramisu and celebrate Valentine's Day. Today, this charming renovated restaurant is home to the legendary 'Esplanade Strukli' - traditional dish of Zagreb region - and the best in town! Le Bistro offers light breakfast, excellent coffee, awarded cakes, croissants, Menu du jour at just 22 EUR (3-course menu per Chef's choice with glass of house wine, coffee or tea), seasonal a la carte menu designed by celebrity chef Ana Grgic and seasonal promotional menus. Enjoy Le Bistro during breakfast, lunch or dinner inside or on the green Terrace. Open every day from 9 am - 11 pm

Food is very good, especially the risiotto and steak tartar.
The veal is too salty , not tender enough.
Desert is not good . I had tiramisu : which looks good but soso taste. The famous local desert ( bake cheese ) not so yummy . Skip it! Don’t waste time
Food it’s expensive in Zagreb standard but worth coming .

Kitchen&Grill Plac is a small diner located just below the most famous Zagreb's market - Dolac. Plac, in colloquial language means market, is offering traditional meat delicacies served with fresh vegetables from Docal market. What makes our offer exceptional is the quality of meat. Plac offers cevapcici, pljeskavica, hamburger and cheeseburger made from only 100% beef from domestic breeding. Charcoal grill allows us to prepare it in the best possible way offering you a special experience of soft, juicy and tasteful local delicacies - such as cevapcici. Do not miss to try our somun bread and refresh yourself with a nice selection of local wines and beers.

This was my favorite restaurant in Zagreb and the cevapcici is ridiculously good. It is a smaller place with mostly outdoor Seating. It was 100 degrees Fahrenheit when we were there so the canopy was a welcome relief from the brutal sun.
Prices are reasonable, service was great but Plac is a bit hard to find without GPS or knowledge of the area. Make sure you go up the stairs or you'll walk right past it (like we did). Great spot for a quicker lunch or dinner.
