Cafe on Queens is an unprepossessing looking place, surprisingly large inside, selling coffee, cakes, sandwiches, snacks and cooked meals with good daily specials.
We picked freshly cooked sole, chips and salad and a roast of the day which was beef with roast potatoes and kumala with carrots, peas and sweetcorn (both $12). Good home style cooking, good value
I rate this as 3.5 stars = Good

A beautiful rural spot for a unique experience. The highlight was being waited on and enjoying a beautiful light scone with whipped cream and exquisite raspberry jam and a cuppa whilst surrounded with cups and saucers of our parents era and pots of pretty flowers. I understand the challenge of keeping the entrance path and surrounding Gardens weedfree but I was surprised at how untidy the Gardens and edges were in places. However the bright and breezy service, interesting furniture and general gorgeous situation with beautifully trimmed miniature hedging did make it a memorable outing.

A friend told me about this nicely renovated historic hotel, just 2 minutes off the main road between Oamaru and Timaru, that we should check out. Glad we did because we found a hidden gem. The place reeks local history with photos on the walls. The blue cod was fantastic. Service was very friendly and hospitable. Clean restrooms. Plenty of parking. Looked like a nice place to stay for a night as well.
