The real specialty here is sugar in various forms. A generous selection of Turkish sweets, loukoum, baklava, etc. Pretty intense sugar high. Plenty of cigarette smoking if that is an issue.
Helps to know some Turkish, or else you will mostly find yourself pointing, sometimes not to perfect effect.

There are several alternatives for dining in Van city and a traditional one is Saç Kavurma. Although they serve it with tomatoes and potatoes that are not traditionally Turkish, the meat when added on buttered pilav is a good option to have for lunch. You should ask for Cacik too. This is a side dish of yogurt and cucumbers which is healthy.

I had the iskender of my life here, and only for 13 TL !!!
Everything is just perfect here. the location is the best. just next to Ziraat Bankasi, where you pass by maybe 5 times a day if you are wandering about in Van shopping or sightseeing. You can sit next to the window upstairs and watch the main street (Cumhuriyet) people passing by, cars waiting at the red light.
The foods are delicious. Iskender comes from heaven. teraygi is added to your meal at the table. try anything, you wont regret.
Staff are super friendly. specially a handsome guy called Necmettin, so good at his job and in communication with customers. thanks Necmettin.
Dont miss Halil Ibrahim Sofrasi if you are in VAN.

Un ristorante sul lago che vi farà ricredere sulla bontà del pesce di lago …
Assaggiate gli inçi kefali i pesciolini di lago cosi saporiti e croccanti! Gli hamsi, come le nostre acciughe, e i piccoli istaurit, di cui potrete farvi una scorpacciata.
Il tutto rigorosamente preceduto ( e non seguito) dal formaggio locale otlu feynir, con aggiunta di erbette della zona, da mangiare assieme all’insalata proprio all’inizio del pranzo.
Affidatevi alle gentili e sapienti mani dello chef, che vi porterà un plateau di pesce (grigliato o fritto) da far invidia ai nostri strombazzati ristoranti sul mare, occhio che qui il pesce lo mangiano con le mani, innaffiato di limone, (. (ma vi inonderanno di salviette profumate subito dopo).
L’olio di oliva ha un colore che rivela come non sia di prima qualità (cosa purtroppo ricorrente in Turchia) ma tutto il resto –compreso il dessert tipico del luogo- è memorabile e conferma quello che mi avevano detto: questo è uno dei migliori ristoranti della zona.
Servizio silenzioso e impeccabile, davvero molto efficiente.
Prezzi in linea col mercato e comunque la metà di quello che pensate voi italiani.
Ci tornerò, spero.

This restaurant is at first floor level accessed through a very nondescript flight of stairs.....don't be put off! The food is very good indeed; standard fare for the area but best in class and very large portions at a highly reasonable price. Traditional food at its best and with very friendly attentive waiters.All in all a good dining experience topped off with some of the best Ayran available. ...well recommended

This is the best restaurant I visited in Van. Rather than produce the rather formulaic menus elsewhere this sets out to produce unusual but nevertheless local specialities. Our meal with spectacular pastry encased pilau,chickpea spectacular, delicate fried minced meat pastry, Teheran soup and salad topped off with rice pudding cinnamon and almonds was delicious and high quality by any body's standards.The only thing the meal fell down on imo was the sausage dish on both taste and texture but that could be me! Factor in really friendly service despite a language barrier and this is a very good dining experience

Aslında 1-2 daha ünlü kahvaltı salonu daha listemizde olmasına rağmen gölün tam üstünde olduğu için burayı tercih ettik, çok hızlı servis gerçekten, ama öyle ahım şahım bir lezzet yok. Peynirler ve zeytinler son derece kötüydü. Bal-kaymak evet, çeşit de çok bol değildi, yani bir daha gitmem, Van'da zaten her şeyin çok tuzlu olması gibi bir sorun var, bana lezzetli gelmedi. Niye bu kadar ünlü Van kahvaltısı bilemedim.
