Union River Lobster Pot

We ate here while on vacation back in 2011 and have been waiting to come back again. Glad to have made it back in September of 2017. It is almost worth the trip from Indy just to have dinner at Union River Lobster Pot. You have to eat here if you are in Bar Harbor or Ellsworth Maine. The service is excellent and they serve up some of the best lobster you will ever put into your mouth.

I don't like giving 5 star reviews because I think too many will give a 5 star when the establishment is not really deserving BUT this place deserves 5 stars.

We ate here the first night of our stay in the Trenton/Bar Harbor area and were not disappointed. The line is often long, but moves quickly. The staff are exceptionally friendly and welcoming, and the food was terrific - great value for the money. We had whole lobster, corn, and lobster bisque. We picked out the lobsters ourselves and they were taken outside to be cooked upon ordering. Everything was fresh and cooked just right. Simple, high-quality food.

The Crocker House Country Inn

The whole experience was great. A nice quiet small intimate place. Greeted warming by the hostess and our waiter. Waiter was very informative about everything and was on top of everything without have to ask twice. Started with drinks (blueberry margarita), soft shelled crab for an appetizer, followed by veal with bernaise sauce and shrimp. The bread btw was also very good. All was very good, as a matter of fact. Decent amount of tender veal, sauce was good, but I could recommend this dish to be with either crab meat or lobster meat - just feel that this would be a better flavor with the dish (scallops wouldn't do it either). Bill was on the high end with the drinks and food, but it is one of those cases where we were not disappointed by the food at all or the wonderful service.

This place was recommended to us by my niece who lives in Ellsworth. Unlike some ice cream places around that serve Gifford's ice cream that you could just go buy at the grocery store this place makes their own and you can tell the difference. My only complaint would be that I decided to get Ginger Beer that they sell on tap. This is a soda made with ginger that is spicy and has a little kick. I had recently tried Maine Root Ginger Beer and loved it. This was Captain Eli's and it was flat as a pancake and awful. Not sure if it is just that bad or they were serving flat soda.

We went there for dinner on a weekday evening. It was crowded so we decided to do take-out. We order a couple of the smaller lobsters and one large ones. Got back to our lodging and found all were the same small size. They also talked us into getting a whole blueberry pie for $20 (a deal, it was listed at $25). It was about half the size of a regular pie and the worst blueberry pie we had in 2 weeks in Maine.

We recently got the opportunity to stop in for lunch, but I have been going to Finn's for a long time. I love the atmosphere, with a delightful interior and fantastic live music when you're lucky enough to be there for it. The menu is great, with something for everyone and the specials are often some delicious off menu dishes. My favorite menu items are the Fish and Chips (homemade chips), The Reuben Sandwich is one of the best around (which is fabulous and usually the first thing I try at any restaurant offering it) and any of the burgers on the menu. I also particularly enjoy the Blackened Salmon Sandwich and dinner options. They cook a perfect burger here. And don't forget the dessert menu! The food is also very consistent which I always appreciate and their seasonal cocktail menu is always worth a look. The service there is always very good, and the staff are always warm and friendly without being overbearing. It can get busy so its always a good idea to call ahead or do reservations when available.

Reviewed By Henry L - Delray Beach, Florida

Don't expect a great rating from either the appearance or the food. The cleanliness had a great deal to be desired. Went in to the men's room to wash my hands and it was filthy. The waste basket was overflowing on to the floor with used paper towels. This was mid afternoon with no other customers and employees were standing around doing nothing. It was quite cold outside and when we came into the restaurant, it was freezing. We had to ask them to turn up the A/C because it was freezing inside. It seemed to have college kids working in there who did not seem to care about any of the above. I suppose that is a management issue but it did not excuse the pun leave a good taste in our mouth.
As to the food, it was just OK. My wife had a smoked brisket sandwich and it was very dry and not at all tasteful. I had a smoked lobster. I asked for at least a 1 3/4 lb or bigger and they said they only had 1 1/4 lb. lobsters. They charged the same as as 1 3/4 lb and then on top of that they charged extra to put it on the smoker for a minute or two. The management really needs to get their act together and make some major changes. If you are going to charge high prices compared to local competition then there should be a justification.

Sorry, I absolutely do not recommend you stopping and eating at this restaurant. Chance it if you want too. Perhaps they finally cleaned up this filthy restaurant and bad food.

I love my lobster grilled...and this place did not disappoint. Did I mention I had ribs with my lobster.? Not sure which was better, the ribs were smoked perfectly, and the lobster was superb. A funky place just outside of Bar Harbor with fantastic food, and a great selection of local craft beers.
