July 20, 2017 Russell Mellin

Southern Leyte (Cebuano: Habagatang Leyte, Filipino: Timog Leyte) is a province in the Philippines located in the Eastern Visayas region. Its capital is the city of Maasin. Southern Leyte was a sub-province of Leyte until it was made into an independent province. Southern Leyte includes Limasawa, an island to the south where the first Roman Catholic Mass in Philippine soil is believed to have taken place and thus considered to be the birthplace of Roman Catholicism in the Philippines.

I had heard about this restaurant and continued my search on a dark Tahusan Beach Road. I could not see any sign indicating that I was approaching one of the best restaurants in Southern Leyte. When I found the restaurant a was suprised about the perfect ambiance and the quality of the food. This is realy a hidden treasure.

My first evening in Maasin, my host took us to Kinamot. I enjoyed the location so much, the views of the water and the open air. Perfectly enjoyable. I went cautiously into Philippine cuisine, ordering chicken inasal, a nice marinated chicken then grilled. Very tasty. Prices were very reasonable, and we had no wait for a table on a Wednesday night.

Small restaurant adjacent to Sugod Bay Dive run by a husband and wife team - Alma being the chef, and Jerry the front man/waiter.
Their clients appear to be mainly foreigners visiting Padre Burgos for recreational diving.
The fried shrimp, grilled squid, singigang pork are amazing.
Being a small restaurant, not all the dishes are available - we got into a habit of asking whats good/available, and were never disappointed. Incidentally we stayed at Kuting Reef resort, but generally had lunches in Kinamot in Maasin and dinner at Moose & Squirrel.

Delia, the 'better half' of the owning Warren couple, really knows how to cook.
The meal that we enjoyed here was delicious and properly cooked. The prawns were juicy and therefore mouth watering, while the accompaying vegetables were crisp and filling.
Service was just right: not too intrusive but never too far away.
A five star experience at a three star price for a Westerner.

The drinks weren't cold when they were served. It took them about 30 minutes to serve the iced tea. Nachos are oily. Their fries are okay, but if you are not a mayonnaise person, ask them not to taint your fries with mayonnaise. Not too sweet, so it's alright. The strawberry oreo doesn't compliment the cookie flavor drink.
Staff aren't friendly at all. Was only helpful when we asked for extra chairs 3x.
There's a room for big groups. Place is not spacious at all. There are about 5-6 tables inside.

Mr Wok

I stumbled across this restaurant while walking around Maasin.
It was decorated for the Valentine'sDay of earlier that week. The restaurant is atmospheric and double storey.
Waitresses were attractively attired.
I ordered a banana shake at P35 and stir fried scallops with cashew nuts and asked that vegetables be included. Scallop dish was P210 and had tiny scallop pieces.
The meal took half an hour to arrive and the drink a further 10 despite a reminder.
Food was seved hot, as ought be the case and was very pleasing to the palate. Serving size was generous.
I followed with a fried banana in toffee dessert. This was a huge serve. Despite my liking for sweets I could not finish it. There was also a small amount of ice cream while the plate was decorated with a dribble of strawberry topping, all for P75.
Male CR (toilet) was clean.
It was easy to get a trike back to lovely Caimato Beach Hotel.
