Paisano's

I respect the fact that this place has been in business for nearly 20 years and has provided a lot of wholesome food to the community. It probably is not entirely fair to make judgments based on just one lunch. Still, one does determine whether you are in a hurry to go back, and I am not. The other folks in our luncheon party, my wife and another couple, seemed reasonably pleased with their shrimp and fish dishes. The accompanying salad was large, and for me dominated by bland iceberg lettuce and a less than subtle dressing. I made the mistake of ordering a gyro. I've had many, many gyros in diners and Greek restaurants all over the East Coast and frequently in Greece. Skip this one. The mystery meat doesn't do it justice.

The service is friendly if a bit ditzy. I don't think I should have to ask for a glass to go with a beer. The menu is vast, and the pizza boxes are piled to the ceiling. Perhaps another dish would have made me more enthusiastic. The coleslaw was decent; so too the onion rings. The ambiance is right out of My Big Fat Greek Wedding. The prices are modest and they obviously have a local following. The mostly Italian-American menu is about as predictable as what you find in modest Chinese restaurants. The overall effect is generic.

We happened to be passing through Easthampton when our contact told us about this local bagel place. What a surprise--it was most unexpected! The bagels are great. I had the poppyseed, toasted with cream cheese. The coffee is also excellent. The bagels are just he way I like them--moist and chewy, with a nice crust. The atmosphere is old school/industrial. It's a pleasant and inviting place. I'd definitely go back!

Mt. Tom's Homemade Ice Cream

We are an old-fashioned homemade ice cream and candy store. Located in the charming small town of Easthampton, Massachusetts, we make all our own ice cream right on the premises! With high tin ceilings, hardwood floors and a soda fountain counter with red bar stools, our shop will take you back to a simpler time. You can find us on Cottage Street, on the Nashawannuck Pond, and right up the street from the boardwalk. We're open year-round.

I pretty much like every flavor I've tried at Mt. Tom. They have the "secret formula" down perfect. You can taste the fresh ingredients, and the milkfat balance is spot on. Some "super premium" offerings elsewhere overdo the fat content so that you get an unpleasant waxy residue left on your mouth, like after eating a doughnut. (another thing I don't need!)

Mt. Tom is the "baby bear" ice cream. Just right. And I'm glad I'm closer than 50 miles! Go in the evening, get some cones, and take a stroll to the nearby pond and enjoy!

Small Oven Bakery

I've lived in the Pioneer Valley for over 20 years and have visited most restaurants here. Most restaurants here are decent-if overpriced. Small Oven is special. So special. They care about the flavor of every. single. bite. Someone clearly thinks through every detail. For example: yesterday I tried the roasted eggplant sandwich with parsley, mild feta, carmelized onions and a kind of tangy yogurty sauce. This sandwich could have gone a little wrong in many ways: salty feta, runny sauce, bitter eggplant, not washed parsley. But it was perfect. The balance of flavors was perfect. It's the same with everything on the menu. Small oven is seriously a gem.

I had the burrito with roast pork. It was excellent. The best burrito I've had. Good chips and salsa.

This is small place. Seems to do a lot of take-out. I found it pulling off the Mass Pike at dinner time for a quick meal on a trip to NY. I'll be back.

Good value - dinner for two $23 (burritos, chips & drinks).

Riff's Joint

Reviewed By marianc95 - Belmont, Massachusetts

I was out in Easthampton for a meeting in a refurbished factory building that now houses offices, shared work spaces, a few commercial establishments--and a restaurant called Riff's Joint. Never would I have expected to find such a pleasant, upbeat lunch place in that location! Its decor is bright and cheery, the counter staff is friendly and outgoing, and the menu choices are considerable. There's everything from chips and salsa to Thai lettuce wraps, from burgers and sweet potato fries to tacos, and from unusual "riffwiches" to varied salads. One can build one's own sandwich or design one's own pizza. Moreover, they make everything themselves and favor fresh, local ingredients. Prices are fair. The place appears to be thriving. In fact, there's a second Riff's out in Turner's Falls. If you're in central Massachusetts, why not give one of these places a try? NB: Riff's Joint is casual and has no waitstaff.
