Where to Eat in Sabaragamuwa Province: The Best Restaurants and Bars

December 24, 2017 Jana Sager

The Sabaragamuwa Province, (Sinhalese: සබරගමුව පළාත Sabaragamuwa Palata, Tamil: சபரகமுவ மாகாணம் Sabaragamuwa Maakaanam) is one of the nine provinces of Sri Lanka, the first level administrative division of the country. The provinces have existed since the 19th century but did not have any legal status until 1987 when the 13th Amendment to the Constitution of Sri Lanka established provincial councils. The Sabaragamuwa Province contains two districts: Ratnapura and Kegalle. It is named after its former indigenous inhabitants, namely the Sabara, an indic term for hunter-gatherer tribes, a term seldom used in ancient Sri Lanka. Sabaragamuwa University is in Belihuloya.

Stopped for breakfast on way to Kandy. The place offers assorted snacks, but I would suggest one sticks to only bakery treats. Service was excellent and the tea was fabulous. Would certainly visit this place again.

Wahalkada

Reviewed By Sirimewan - Great Yarmouth, United Kingdom

I discovered Wahalkada in a previous visit and was looking forward to returning. There are several features that interested me in the previous visit. Location and architecture are two of them. It's built on sloping land next on the bank of a small river / stream taking advantage of the view the site offers. In a country where most of the buildings are just reproductions of featureless square boxes the building itself is designed sensitive to the topography of the site, climatic conditions and taking cues from historic buildings of the country. High ceilings and open spaces take advantage of the natural convection making air-conditioning unnecessary. The building even encircles a massive tree adding to the ambience and feeling of space.
Wahalkada serves authentic Sri Lankan quisine, may be a bit spicy for the uninitiated western traveller. There is a reasonable spread of Sri Lankan food in the buffet making it possible not to be bored even if one returns soon.
Located about a third of the way between Colombo and Kandy it's conveniently located for a comfort-break clean and convenient. It's a pity they don't take full advantage of the location by offering snacks and tea in addition to main meals.
The staff polite and attentive, on the whole I would like to see this place prosper and serve the travelling public for a long time. I hope the management takes my criticism of the restricted menus to offer more options than just main meals.

Title says it all really, other than rather pricey by Sri Lankan standards. Food was okay - big portions of things like fried rice but rather bland. Whole sections of food and even soft drinks just not available. Right on the main road so noisy too.
