Where to Eat in Puerto Iguazu: The Best Restaurants and Bars

December 21, 2017 Rosalyn Ihle

Perched at the Triple Frontier, where Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina meet, Puerto Iguazu is linked to Brazil by the Tancredo Neves bridge. It is home to the Museum of Images of the Jungle, the Mborore Museum, a bird rehabilitation center and the famed Iguazu National Park. The National Park is home to 275 waterfalls, including the world-renowned Iguazu Falls, which plunges 270 feet. A subtropical climate means it's warm in winter and hot in summer, with temperatures soaring up to 104°F.

I was on my way to another restaurant when I saw this one. The reviews looked good, it was also recommended highly by Trip Advisor. The meal started off well with a nice glass of champagne and a lovely bread basket. Had it not been for the breadbasket I would not have had anything to eat last night. I ordered the stuffed breast of chicken. It was so dry that I could not eat it. There was also a potato puff which had a strange taste. The only thing good was the purée of pumpkin or butternut squash( not sure exactly which it was). The service was less than attentive. All in all.... a big disappointment.

After travelling for 3 weeks around Argentina I missed some food with spice so I was looking forward to trying this Asian inspired restaurant. Firstly they were out of the salmon teriyaki and then I requested broccoli rather than mixed vegetables with my prawn rice (for which they insisted on charging me more for) and received mush. Sadly not worth a visit.

La Mamma Pastas and Salsas

I came into the restaurant after having gotten completely soaked from it raining outside, and despite being dripping wet, the head chef happily invited me in. I suggested that I sit outside, so as not to get their chairs or floor wet, and he told me to not to dare do it! For my entire meal, the staff was attentive and gracious. I had the bolognese (140 pesos) on my first night and came back the very following day to get some carbonara (230 pesos). In both cases, the noodles were perfectly cooked al dente, and the sauces were magnificent. This very well could have been the best carbonara I've ever had, and I've spent quite a bit of time in Italy! The prices are between 140-280 Argentinian pesos for a plate of pasta, I believe, and the portions are definitely filling (coming from a 6'4" guy with a large appetite). Definitely do not miss out on this place.

The place was practically empty when we arrived however it still had a great atmosphere thanks to the lovely outdoor Seating area and the top quality service. We were pleasantly surprised to find the menu had plenty of pizza options including a good number of vegetarian options (perfect as I am vegetarian) -- there were also other non-pizza options but I got the impression that pizza is the specialty. The pizza was excellent. The vegetables from the assado were succulent and perfectly done and the pizza had a nice thin base/crust just the way I like it.

We went to La Mision on a winter night. The first impression was the place was cold, both temperature and architecture-wise. The space feels like the lobby of a corporate building, lots of concrete and mega high ceilings. The venue may work better for lunch, with more light/views and less of cavernous feeling. The food took what seemed like ages. At one point the waiter came by and apologized for the delay, but jokingly added "another hour and a half and your food will be here." We didn't see the humor. Eventually the food arrived but it was spotty. I had an assortment of 3 river fish (surubi, pacu and boga.) They were all small, thin servings of dry-tasting fish. (The boga was basically fish skin with no meat.) We had more luck with a local appetizer of corn and cheese in a mandioca-flour burrito. That was very tasty, like a more flavorful quesadilla. Our Deserts were winners all around: we had a red berry soup and a two-chocolate parfait (like a very buttery ice cream), both delicious. In sum: If you go, pick your main dishes carefully, and pray for fast service.
