Where to Eat in Porto Azzurro: The Best Restaurants and Bars

February 3, 2018 Natalie Tallman

Porto Azzurro is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Livorno in the Italian region Tuscany; it is on the island of Elba, located about 130 kilometres (81 miles) southwest of Florence and about 90 kilometres (56 mi) south of Livorno. It was formerly called Porto Longone, and in 1557 Iacopo VI Appiani, Prince of Piombino, granted Spain the right to build a fortress there. It was transferred to the Kingdom of Naples in 1735 under the terms of the 1725 Treaty of Vienna, and then to France in 1801, when Napoleon established the Kingdom of Etruria.

We expected more from this restaurant. The food was not bad it was just average and for that we paid too much. The place is crowded, they tried to squeeze in as many people as possible and the atmosphere suffers due to that. And I hate waiters that speak Italian (or other language) to you when they know English and are well aware you do not speak their language. Big thumbs down.

Despite Porto Azzurro being one of the busiest tourists' destination in Elba Island you can have a dining experience in this restaurant. Pasta with octopus was excellent and the same for codfish (two different varieties tried). I had a great palamita. Expect 30-40 euro per person w/o wine. A deal everywhere. The nice setting in a small court is worth a reservation (something I suggest anyway)

Ristorante La Caletta

I suspect that this restaurants overall rating is being dragged down by the fact that it is really two quite different and seperated restaurants. They have a Pizzeria which is adjacent to the gourmet restaurant, and if you read through the trip advisor reviews you'll see that some of the reviews focus on the Pizzeria and some focus on the gourmet restaurant. We did not eat at the pizzeria, so I cannot comment on if those critiques are fair or not.
What I can tell you is...
The gourmet restaurant is excellent by local standards. Can you get better food in Manhattan, or Paris? Yes. But, we're not in Manhattan or Paris. For Porto Azzurro, and I'd bet all of Elba, it don't get better than this.
The view is incredible, the menu has many interesting dishes, and interesting preparations, the wine list is long with many options at all price points. I should also mention that boaters will appreciate the dinghy dock. The service was attentive and perfect.
Were the prices high? Yes, a bit. But, once again, I'd consider this a romantic dinner with a great view, and if you aren't ready to spend a little money, it's perhaps not the right restaurant for you. That said, I don't have the menu in front of me now, but I don't remember the prices being all that high. My recollection is that I had an amazing shrimp-stuffed ravioli starter that cost around 18 euros and a steak in a pastry crust that was 25 euros. My wife started with a Caprese, that had the best tomatoes we have found in Italy, and real Burrata. She followed it with a black truffle steak that was covered with sliced truffles. I don't recall the cost, but whatever it was, it was worth it.The vast majority of the check came from the wine we picked, but it was the perfect accompaniment to the meal, and there were plenty of lesser priced wines I could have selected. My only negative: portions were a little on the small side. I would happily have eaten more.
The bottom line: If the weather is good, and you are seeking a waterfront romantic dinner, with good food, good service, and a good wine list. La Caletta is where I'd recommend you try.

If you want to enjoy a different dinner in Porto Azzurro, this place is a must! You can taste very good wines from Elba, but also from every region of Italy, accompanied by fine Italian food: bruschette, home made delicatessen and cheeses, and other delicious plates. And don't miss the dessert with cantuccini and Aleatico or Ansonica Passito!

Tamata Ristorante

The cuisine of Tamata is based on the continuous proposal of new courses, on the research of new cooking methods and on the constant attention to the selection of the products used, high quality foods and environmentally sustainable. Where possible we have privileged local, organic and “Km 0” products. We only use meat from organic and Tuscan farms, who pay special attention not only to the welfare of animals, but also to the environmental conservation. Sometimes it was not possible to choose on the basis of these criteria. In these cases, we have selected the best products available, which express the distinctive character of their origin. The dishes of our cuisine it's not only an expression of the Italian culinary tradition, but represent a "journey" in gastronomy from around the world, from the Mediterranean area, to Northern Europe, to the Far East. Buon appetito! And good journey in our "route of taste". Fabio.

It's possible the expectations after one week in Tuscany with sensational and charming Slow Food restaurants were unrealistic, but La Tavernetta in Porto Azzurro was really a disappointment. The service and view were ok, but the the food is boring, ordinary and expensive compared with what you get. It's maybe unfair to use the word tourist trap about this place, but that was our impression after spending a few hour here.

First point, is not to rely on the Dublin reviewer for directions! (As I found to my detriment). It's not by the Agip petrol station, it's much closer to the one with the car wash and shamrock sign. You have to drive down a narrowish lane to the car park.
With the benefit of hindsight, I think it would be better to book, but we just turned up. The menu is all in Italian, and reasonably difficult to decipher with a phrase book. The staff did their best to assist us.
The food was delicious. We shared a platter of Tuscan starters which was really good. For main course we had pasta (me) and chicken (him) which were good, although for British tastes you probably need to order some potatoes to go with the chicken. Pudding was also good. I had a mysterious ice cream served in walnut shells. I think we had half bottles of wine which was useful.
Definitely worth a visit!

Sailed into Porto Azzurro and stumbled on this restaurant. Biagio spoke good English, his cooking was first class and he does gluten free pasta. He made me an excellent GF Fusilli alla Vongole which I had not been able to have for years. The fish was good and a sensible wine list. Would happily go again.

went there on account of a recommendation on the eve of the semifinals of the euro soccer championship. I was there to celebrate a special occasion with my fiancee and we were utterly dissapointed.
we had plate of bruscetta, small pieces of italian baguette with a variety of topping. I have no idea how a cook could mess up a simple antipasti like this but each one of the four pieces of bread was hard as a rock and toasted so badly that it was partially black.
as a main course we each ordered a pizza, this place was supposed to be famous for their pizza. I had a quattro stagioni. each one of the toppings was worse than the others. the olive were out of the can and tasted like nothing and everything else was out of the can as well.
the worst thing about my pizza was that the ham was obviously expired. it tasted like it had been expired for quite a while and I could not eat any further because I was so close to vomitting. I am not kidding!! DONT EAT AT THIS PLACE EVER
my fiancee ordered a calzone and the dough on the top of the pizza was raw. it smelled like yeast and it looked like mozzarella.
even though we were only at the place for about an hour we were served by three different waiters. one of them, a middle aged women gave us the impression like she hated us - every single time she came to the table.
what a horrible experience. I would like to point out, that I am not a gourmet and that I dont have special requirements for being a satisfied restaurant customer. I have also eaten my fair share of pizzas in my life and so has my girlfriend, who lived in Italy of more than a year.
we have never eaten such a bad pizza.
