On a river trip with my son, we overnighted in Pakbeng. For dinner, we looked for advice from Tripadvisor and saw Hasan restaurant for Indian food. We got vegetable biryani and paneer tikka. Great disappointment! We have lived in Bangladesh and travelled extensively in India. This food had little to do with Indian food and Indian taste. The paneer was in ketchup. This restaurant cannot be recommended.

Our cruise guide recommended to go here for a sundowner. It was a complete let down!
It stank of sewage, the coke was flat, the bartender didn't have change (two drinks cost 45ooo kip and we gave him 100ooo kip, eventually he found 50ooo kip change but that was it so we were basically forced to give 5ooo kip tip - I know it s not much money but I dislike the principle of it!).
For backpackers arriving from Thailand 50ooo kip for two drinks is steep and it was a total waste of money. Not enjoyable experience at all.

We enjoyed our meal at this restaurant. The place is quite quirky and we enjoyed the menus which double up as guestbooks - allowing us to read the feedback (and dish recommendations) from previous visitors.
The food was pretty good and the restaurant definitely had a family run feel with the children helping to clear plates etc.
Service was "relaxed" so bear that in mind if you are in a hurry!

We cook traditional Lao food in our wood fired owen. The cook is Houan's wife, the best cook of Pakbeng. Free Wifi, Lao Banana whisky, imported spirits, Beerlao, dark lager and free dessert !

Stopped overnight in Pakbeng on our way to Huay Xai via the Mekong river. We decided to walk through the village and check out the scene. At the end of the village we stumbled across the Hive bar and an amazing night ensued. The owner Viengsay K used his entrepreneurial spirit to get us to enter his establishment by offering us a free whisky.VK let me play U2 all night long on his music system and organized incredible Indian food for us. The guy was so nice that he drove my wife to the village on his scooter to pick up other friends of ours. We sang , drank , had conversation with everyone while feeling the good vibes. The Hive bar in Pakbeng reminded me of a mountain village in Crete Greece where I lived over 30 years ago where time stood still and you felt you were in the Center of the Universe.

Coming into Pakbeng we were unsure where to stay or what to eat. Upon talking to the restaurant owner we were sure we wanted to visit BKC restaurant.
Seated over looking the river the view is amazing. Being vegetarian I spoke to the owners and asked for a recommendation. Getting his advise on a curry it was very very good choice.
All five of us left happy with our choices and the customer services was awesome.
Highly recommend on your visit to Pakbeng
