Took a visitor from overseas here, partly because we thought she'd like it, and partly because we hadn't been before despite living locally. We went on a Saturday night for the buffet. Please be aware that if you're vegetarian, they can not cater for you at the Cabaret nights on Fridays. Mainly filled with large family parties and children, you queue at the buffet where there is a large selection of meats, salads, vegetables and seafood. All that was vegetarian as a main was quiche, but my husband filled up on veg and salad. Some traditional German foods, but also mainstream too. There is a large dessert area which seems to be a huge attraction. In the middle of the pre-made desserts that you can choose from there was a cook making fresh pancakes to order. There are no steins to drink from, but they do serve beer. Food was average, at best. Depends on what you like, of course, but it's more quantity over quality, really. Decor was as expected in a Bavarian place named Cuckoo, which was a bit of fun, as were the 2 guys playing traditional music (an older couple were even up dancing). Sadly, I didn't realise there was a seafood section until after I'd eaten, so can't comment on the quality or choice. Kids appeared to love it. Glad we went, but with poor veggie options for my hubby and it being quite costly, I doubt we'll be back.

Great atmosphere. Good service. Very touristy. I regretted ordering scones. They are more like damper than scones. If I return I’ll definitely skip the scones and try something different. Very touristy place and more English than Australian.

Toasted as the top restaurant in Melbourne, there surely isn't one to match the view. You can comfortably see the CBD in the distance, a maze makes the time really enjoyable and drinks as the sun sets are hard to beat, anywhere near Melbourne. The only catch currently is that they seem to be understaffed and food was delayed more than usual. Nevertheless, if you are visiting Melbourne, this will give you a beautiful, brilliant view while you relax.

Fortnums

Delightful English Glass Conservatory Style Building at one end of Sassafras Village that did a roast that I really appreciated!

Reviewed By Rebecca W

Visited here for a family lunch on a weekend.
Venue looks lovely, open, elegant and on site parking, which is a bonus in Sassafras. No stairs to enter the restaurant and no stairs to access the toilets which are inside.
Menu was extensive for this area, a specials board and a kids menu.
Staff were friendly, attentive, accurate and kept the cold water flowing on such a hot day.
The negative points, all the seafood was processed and frozen and just fried by the venue. The jam was served in a very small quantity, for $9.90 excluding drink a Devonshire tea needs a generous serve of jam.

Sassafras Cafe

Fantastic homemade scones, light breakfasts and lunches, and great coffee!!

Reviewed By Roadruna - Melbourne

Caught up with friends here on a cold and wet Sunday morning.
As soon as you enter, your greeted with a smile and great service.
Atmosphere was quiet, warm and welcoming.
We had the scones. Soft and fluffy. Jam was delicious. Coffee was good too.
Great place, hard to find parking as the area is very popular and the crowds were out and about, as usual so I was told, even though the weather was pretty ordinary. I'd imagine the area would be very crowded if the weather was more appealing. So I would say to allow for waiting time to be seated.
But I'd recommend this place. If we go back there, I'd be more than happy to eat here again.

Kelly's Bar and Kitchen

Reviewed By Cocoremote - Ballarat, Australia

Not really into complaining--if I don't like a place I'll usually just decide not to go back. However, this place calls for an exception. It was my second time at Kelly's (first time was OK; service not great but staff apologetic and meal hearty) and officially my last. Warm welcome from one of the staff members but after that we were served by a terrifyingly gruff woman who was so desperate to get our order that we felt under extreme pressure to decide in a hurry. Tried to order something from the specials menu and she grunted that she didn't have it, so quickly chose an alternative: scotch fillet with chips and salad. Scary lady aside, the food was pretty dreadful. Steak was dry and black on the outside; looked less like a $32 dinner and more like a bit of roadkill. Extremely unimaginative salad (two tomato wedges, red onion and "fancy" lettuce that looked as though it had been plopped on the plate straight from one of those "washed and ready to use" bags at Coles) and a very small handful of less-than-average chips. Being the eternal optimist that I am (and still hungry after ditching the steak), I decided to wait for dessert. Unfortunately, they never came to ask us what we wanted, despite there being plenty of empty tables and the scary waitress having time to complain to some friends about how she'd be in the loony bin by the end of the evening.
Moral of the story: don't order the steak. In fact, "do yourself a favour" and don't go at all!
