Crackskull's Coffee & Books

Reviewed By Prentiss P - Durham, New Hampshire

Cozy, warm café/bookstore in the heart of Newmarket. Complete with sofa, soft chairs and a few wooden tables this friendly coffee bar is waiting with open arms for visitors and regulars alike. The best dark roasted, French decaf around. Also, good tunes are always in the air and locals are open for a chat. Alone or with a friend, this is a classic, funky(70's style) hangout - a rapidly disappearing gem.

Big Bean Cafe

Reviewed By loujack48 - Stratham, New Hampshire

Fantastic breakfast and lunch spot - cozy, warm vibe with excellent food and great service! My Yellowstone Omelet was out of this world. Others in our group enjoyed the Down East French Toast, Eggs Florentine and classic Big Bean Breakfast - all were prepared to perfection. In addition to traditional fare, the Big Bean serves up some very creative cuisine - can't wait to go back to sample more of it! As other reviewers have indicated, there's usually a wait to get in. We went at 10:30 on a Monday and waited a modest 15 minutes - a small price to pay for the excellent experience ahead! Big Bean gets my highest recommendation!

Nick is the guiding force at Bloom'n Cow Ice Cream. The Scoop Shop supreme is located in an unexpected place -- the basement of a converted mill building on Route 108. It's an unpretentious place but Nick invests it with creativity and energy. In addition to the expected ice creams, he offers an array of gelatos and coconut based delights that surprise even the sophisticated palate. In particular, his mocha, dulce de leche and stratiatella fill the mouth with flavor. Also available are cookies and marshmallows and taste treats that one just doesn't expect. There are occasional places tat are ouit of the way but which merit a special stop. This is one!

Oak House

If you can eat at the Oak Room when it's not crowded it's a plus, but those times are getting fewer and farther in between - esp when college is in session. However the brisket, pulled pork, root vegetable salad and duck Reuben are spectacular. The sides are inventive - like mango coleslaw. If you are ever depressed try the Brisket grilled cheese. My oh my. Desserts on the weekend like the truffles will make you stay even longer. Good selection of wine, beers and mixed drinks.

Panznellas Italian Pizzeria

We have been going here once or twice a month since they moved to the new location. There is always parking, the menu is huge and varied, the portions are generous and the food is good. On the downside, the atmosphere is very casual and it gets too noisy when it is busy. Staffing and service can be spotty, but is always friendly. We like to go for an early dinner on weekdays.

Good stop for a quick breakfast and the wide assortment of crepes, some with unique ingredients. My favorite though is the wide selection of best ice cream in the seacoast area(Annabelle"s). They also have special ice cream for my dog too!

Joinery

Reviewed By Darien L - Durham, NH

We've visited The Joinery twice and found the food excellent. Everything was fresh and matched the description perfectly. Those who ordered menu items as described found the food excellent. I am on a strict low cholesterol and low sodium diet. Prior to both visits I telephoned and told them I was coming and about my dietary needs. The chef appreciated the call. When I arrived and told the waitress about my needs the chef was prepared. The dinner was presented very artistically and the taste was excellent. In both cases I ordered the fresh catch fish of the day and two vegetables without salt but beautifully displayed on my plate. It was obvious that the food came directly and quickly from the sea, pasture, or soil.

Stone Church

I've been here twice, once for the Monday night blues jam and again for the Thursday Irish music session. The blues house band was mostly hillbilly blues, but some of the jam sessions were really good. The Irish night was great, especially Jordan Wysocki, who's phenomenal. The atmosphere is family-friendly/roadhouse, the drafts selection is good, and the food is okay -- basic, with a limited menu, but the burgers and fish tacos are good. The crowd is diverse, from kids romping around in front of the band to people aged 30 through 70.

The Seacoast of New Hampshire has long been a destination for diners. Now there is a new locale not far from Portsmouth that merits a try. Basil Leaf Thai in Newmarket, just a few minutes from Portsmouth, is a fine hole-in-the-wall restaurant. With seating for fewer than twenty, it is quiet and intimate. It has a full bar and fine food. The daily specials are a special allure. Prices are reasonable and service is good.
