Where to Eat in New Castle: The Best Restaurants and Bars

April 15, 2018 Velvet Champine

New Castle, Delaware, "the first capital of the first state," was founded in 1651. Having been home to Native Americans, the Dutch, and the British, New Castle truly is a "uniquely American place." The Amstel House is a Georgian mansion dating back to 1730. The Dutch House has survived from an even earlier period, featuring furnishings from the 17th century. With ancient graveyards, town greens, old churches and traditional English gardens, New Castle brings history alive.

Hadn’t been to Eclipse Bistro in quite awhile. We were both happy with our meals. My friend had pasta with octopus & I had yummy scallops. We also inhaled our crepe brûlée desserts. A bit pricey but a nice treat...we deserve it!

Had a fun holiday meal with friends and everyone seemed to enjoy their meals. I went with a more exotic pizza - blackened chicken, bacon, roasted peppers with cheddar cheese and honey mustard dressing on a wheat crust - and it really hit the spot. A fun evening out.

The menu indicated their french toast was with vanilla bean panna cotta (it was) and mango compote (no), candied walnuts (yes), toasted coconut (yes) and chambord honey (probably). However, it came out with apple puree, bananas and berries instead of mango compote. Food allergy sufferers may have a really difficult time if the menu ingredients are not respected. Personally, I felt like the apple ruined the entire thing.

Jessop's Tavern

Jessop's proudly specializes in Belgian Beers. We carry over 300 bottles and 21 drafts.

Reviewed By Steve1362 - Avon, Ohio

Located in a building dating back to 1674 in historic New Castle near the waterfront where William Penn first landed in 1682, the stage is well set for the interesting, historic atmosphere one experiences at Jessop’s Tavern created by the period décor, rustic furnishings, staff in period dress, and pewter-look tableware.

Arriving for lunch prior to a business meeting, we were not able to sample any of the interesting beers but we were able to sample a number of the different items on the menu. We all felt the jalapeno beer cheese soup was good and my Town Hall Turkey sandwich on wheat berry bread with cranberry mayonnaise was very good but my colleague felt the Shepard’s Pie was mediocre while another enjoyed her fresh salad.

No one in our group was completely unhappy with their selection and the portions were more than ample; combined with the unique atmosphere, our visit to Jessop’s Tavern was a good, enjoyable experience.

Throwback to the 50s. This place offers free soft serve ice cream but it is a bit bit pricey. Ice cream is creamy and amply in quantity. People still hang out in the parking lot and the stand is straight out of the 50s movie. Fonzy would be right at home here.

Went here for lunch one day since it had been a LONG time since we had been here. When my husband said to pick anywhere for lunch, I remembered how much I used to love their food and thought, "hey we haven't been here in a while". I couldn't remember why, so I thought it would be nice to re-visit them.

Inside we were seated immediately and given menus. It took a while for our server to come around to take our order, but someone else grabbed our drinks while we waited. We ordered a steak with mashed potatoes and ribs with fries/green beans. We were given a loaf of bread while we waited. Bread was very good. It took what seemed like forever to get our hot food, but was probably 20 minutes or so. My fries were drenched in salt. The ribs were also VERY salty. I couldn't even eat the fries they were so bad. I tried wiping the salt off, but it was just way too much!! When the waitress came around and asked how the food was, I hesitantly told her about the salt. She agreed after taking a look. She said she could actually see the salt piled on top of the fries. She took my food back to the kitchen and informed the chefs. Maybe about 5 minutes later the manager came over and apologized. They gave me a new order of ribs/fries/beans and even took the cost of my food off the bill. It was still saltier than I like, but was much better than the original order. Green beans were tasty on the plus side. AND my husband enjoyed his steak/mashed potatoes.

Overall, food was TOO SALTY. I think that is why we quit eating here in the first place. It's a shame because we used to like their food. I wish they would lighten up on the salt. It make it almost inedible. Atmosphere is comfortable and casual. Waitstaff was friendly. Management tried to correct issues to customer satisfaction and it was appreciated. However, the salt level is just not a match for our tastes. I don't think we will be back any time soon.

I was visiting from out of town and we stopped here twice during our five day stay! It was so nice to find an ice cream place still open in October. The ice cream was excellent and the service was fast and friendly. There are some picnic tables on which to sit and enjoy your yummy treats. If I return to Pennsville, I'm returning to the Custard Stand!

This place has some of thee worst food and service I have experienced in DE. They have a no takeout policy and even though my sister only ordered an appetizer they refused to let her order an entree because of the no take out rule. The waitress advised her she could order but she had to eat some of it so that they knew she wasn't just trying to take it to go. The waitress walks away and the manager walks over and says oh no, we cannot allow you to order anything else because of the no take out rule. When closing out our bill the waitress ask my sister for her card then says oh wait one second while a clear your table. My chicken tejas came cold... we were a mixed group regarding race, however my sister was borderline picked on! NEVER AGAIN

Extensive sandwich menu. Great place for lunch and to savor a thinly sliced roast beef sandwich which come in 3 sizes starting with the Kaiser. Add sharp cheese or broccoli rabe at an extra cost. Tables are limited, so come early to find a seat around lunch time. Many takeout orders while we ate. Pretty prompt service considering the busy hour. Worth a trip to New Castle.
