Restaurant Mtskhetis Darbazi

Reviewed By bryan-quiller-hire - Tbilisi, Georgia

Mtskhetis Darbazi is a little ways away from all the typical tourist restaurants in Mtskheta, and not on the main village traffic road where the buses stop to let off 100 hungry teenagers to suddenly pile into a roadside restaurant and engorge themselves on pork chunks cooked on low heat coals [mtsvadi]. Mtskhetis Darbazi restaurant manor is very classy by any country's terms. It is a well designed and attractive manor-like estate building, with tastefully arranged Georgian cooking utensils and warfare historical artifacts positioned on the walls, like in a gallery or museum. The service is good, a rarity in Georgia, and the food excellent. They even have super fresh salmon mtsvadi [shish kebab] that is out of this world, and chicken chunks with secret spices 'mtsvadi', so tasty you will be encouraged to finish off another liter or two pitchers of local high grade white wine. Anything you order here will be top quality. It is maybe 10-15 percent more expensive than other traditional fare Georgian restaurants, but the quality is many hundreds percent better. All around the manor is a large garden, and you can eat out there also. Try to find the little private gazebo, it is maybe the best place of all to eat with your special loved one or with silver sterling friends.

Huge place with a strange ordering system. First you find a table to sit, got the table number and go to order: The Hinkaly in one place and the Hachapoury and soup in another. You got the food very fast but if you need something, forget it. No one pays attention. The food is good. Recommended, but only if you come with a local person.

Outdoor Seating? Yes; Private dining rooms? Yes It was a nice stopping place for lunch. Good food and great service. Though it does seem strange to have a private room for dining. Should be easy to have private conversations. In addition, there are clean bathrooms.

Lago's Wine

The company has owned the vineyard and a small wine cellar (marani) in the village of Chardakhi, Mtskheta Region, for over 50 years. The vineyard is situated in Mukhrani valley, which is one of the best and most historically well-known sites in Georgia. At present, the company produces approximately 3000 bottles of dry white wine named "Iagos Wine". All of the viticultural and vinification processes involved in the production of this wine follow environmentally pure, and traditional Georgian techniques. The wine is made with one of the best Georgian vine species "Chinuri". Then, the wine is fermented and stabilized in the clay pitchers (Qvevri), which are 3 centuries old.

Nice wine. Beautiful winery. Educated owner. But....
My husband and I went to Iago's winery since we wanted to see how wine is produced in kvevri. Iago replied to my request for the tour really quickly and asked to confirm the visit two days before arrival. I sent the confirmation email as it was agreed but no reply. I called upon arrival and Iago told me to come. Yes, we got information but it was really basic. I read much more about it in Internet. All other guests who came with a guide got food. When I asked to give us some since cheese, bread and walnuts were not enough, Iago told me that he cannot guarantee it. Finally they brought us a small plate of chicken for 2 people. Therefore, I came to conclusion that you will see Georgian hospitality in Iago's house but only if you come with the guide. Of course, he apologized but he needs just to plan more quantity of visits to his place to maintain level of service. Perhaps it was just unlucky day for us. Just for your information we paid 80 lari for wine (2 samples) and chacha tasting, chicken, 1 bottle of saperavi and 1 bottle of chacha.

While visiting twice the place, it is great spot by the river, not far (30 min.) from Tbilisi. Cool and spacious for both big and small parties and also families. Very popular with locals, especially with children because of lot of space and grass between the tables. Plenty of parking space, especially by the river (first turn to the right). The food is Georgian and very good. Service is also quite good but do not expect they will smile (probably not included in price). In the evening there is a (partially live) music, a mixture of Georgian, Russian and Western. Is much too loud, so if you want to save yours eardrums, sit more in the back in the garden. Definitely worth of visit (and do not confuse it with Armazi Dzveli restaurant that is about 3 km before this restaurant.

We stumbled upon this restaurant based on the reviews from Trip Advisor, and we were not disappointed. This little restaurant, tucked away beneath one of the landmark churches in Mtskheta and with nice view of the Mountains, offers a nice reprieve from the typical touristy restaurant. They offer a nice blend of Georgian and French cuisines. We really enjoyed the duck, which is exceptionally rich, but worth it. They do a nice job on desserts, so save some room. They don't have a large complicated selection of wines, and in fact, the restaurant reminds me of a small cafe in Italy where there is a choice of just red and white house wines. They serve a wonderful compote, not too sweet and very refreshing. The maitre d'hotel is just lovely, she speaks at least three languages fluently (English, Russian, Georgian) and truly makes you feel welcome and valued as a customer.
