Le Saint Trop

Reviewed By cascaispickles - Newark-on-Trent, United Kingdom

Le St Trop was recommended by our hotel, and was a superb choice for dinner. The staff were helpful, the menu was promising, and the wine list good. We were not disappointed - excellent food, nice wine, and very friendly service and ambience. All other diners were French, and we can't say whether the staff speak English. The price was perhaps a bit high - but worth it for, overall, one of the best dining experiences we've had in France for several years. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone, although it's not very suitable for families with young children.

Au Bistrot

We were wandering around this medieval town centre looking for somewhere to have an evening meal. We noticed this place was busy - always a good sign. All the outside tables were either taken or reserved but as it was over 35 degsC we were so glad to eat inside where it was a bit cooler. Attentive service, well presented home cooked food. Simply delicious... Very friendly, too.

Autel de la Crepe

Reviewed By Peter&Alison - Battle, United Kingdom

For over 30 years now I have been traveling to different parts of France in connection with my business.
On my way home to England from South West of France towards the end of July my wife and I stopped off at the small town of Montlucon for an overnight break.
Purely by chance during the evening of our stay we found this little creperie. It is in an old part of the town not far from the river. Blink and you could miss it. It is nestled in the shadows of an ancient church and in a small street of "quaint" buildings all of some very considerable antiquity.
We sat outside to have our meal. Looking around us you could almost imagine that things had not changed there for over 400 years.
Being a creperie of course, they are only serving crepes, but wow what crepes they are.
There were over 80 different crepes to choose from.
L’ Autel de la Crepe is certainly an establishment for those with a discerning palate and for those who can appreciate really good food at it’s very best.
My wife had No. 79 Framoisine. A light pancake, cream, vanilla ice cream and Raspberry sauce.
I had No 29 Saint Jacques. A light pancake, 5 large scallops, finely sliced green vegetable (courgettes I think) and a wonderful thick butter & cream sauce.
My wife managed to finish her crepe, but I was unable to eat all of mine because the portion was so large.
After the meal my wife and I shared a light crepe made with a fudge and butter sauce crepe and we both thought that we thought that we died and gone to heaven. I cannot tell what number this was from the menu because it was a recommendation from the proprietor.
Without any question of doubt they are the very best crepes that I have ever had the pleasure of eating and I have eaten hundreds of crepes over the years.
The service was excellent and the bill reasonable.
Would we go back there again. Most definitely tomorrow if we could.
Would we recommend it. I think that we already have.

Le Saint'Anne

Reviewed By NoTimeToWasteAnymore - Dublin, Ireland

Arrived in Montlucon, tired and hungry after a long drive. Wandered into town, about 8.00pm on a Thursday, and looked in a few restaurants.Chose this one partly because there were people in it, and also because my wife is coeliac (needs gluten free) and buckwheat crepes (gallettes) are usually GF. We were given our choice of tables and when I explained our GF requirement, we were given a reassuring "No Problem" and shown the list of standard gallettes on the menu.
We shared a salad starter, and my wife had a Gallette, I had a "Composee" which I would describe as a Gourmet Gallette. Everything was delicious and very filling.
The service was friendly and professional, A little thing, I demolished all the bread which accompanied the starter (as I was rather hungry), so just before the mains arrived, another basket of bread was placed on the table - I'm not sure if this was standard practice, it appeared that they had noticed how quickly I ate the bread and simply (professionally) supplied some more.
Along with our meal, we had a half-litre pichet of wine, two coffees (very nice coffee) and the total bill was 42 euro. Pretty good for France.
It does more than crepes/gallettes - we just didn't look at the other options.
The restaurant filled up very quickly after we arrived so it is obviously a popular spot with the locals. We chose very well.
Highly recommended.

Restaurant Le Grenier a Sel

This is proberly one of the best resturants in Montlucon. We went here a pax of 8 to a business dinner. I arrived early waiting for the rest of the party. As I do not speak french it was imposible to communicate with the staff. As a result I was waiting outside (lovely surroundings) for 20 minutes, not once was I offered to order a drink. Strange and not ok
Once all 8 was seated the servings started. bread missing at one plate, we had to continously pour our own wine and ran out more than once wich is not ok, slow service and not living up to the standard of the place
Food it self was very good, all servings was well prepared, well presented and tasteful, the real star of the show is definantly the food. We had the suggested menu of a soup with Foi Gras, free range stuffed Turkey and french selection of cheese. For 40 EUR/pax really good value and worth every penny for sure
Location in the center of the old town is very nice and charming, a gem of a location
Would be happy to go back and feel torn in giving such a mixed review but service needs to step up to really let the place shine. great potential in food and location

Le Restaurant Du Traiteur

We came across this restaurant as we wanted something quick and warm to eat.
There isn't much choice of restaurants open in this area at this time of day.
We thought we would try something different, on entry you are shown to your table and then you are able to grab a plate and choose from a selection of starters from the cold buffet. They have a big selection of salads, cheeses, hams and eggs.
You can keep going up as often as you want and then move on to your main dishes.
The mains consist of a variety of meats such as duck legs, rabbit paupiettes, pork rib, chicken and tongue all in a variety of sauces like a casserole dish. You can choose chips and vegetable as accompaniments.
The food was well cooked and served as a gap filler however it reminded me of school dinner food and I can't say I would return in a hurry.

Sushi Hanami

A quiet Wednesday lunch with just one other couple dining at the time. The service was attentive, yet discreet and very pleasant. The restaurant was clean and tidy with ok toilet facilities. My friend and I ordered a set menu including miso soup, sushi rolls, breaded chicken, rice and skewered meat, we also added some extra gyoza. The sushi was fresh and all served in a large bento box. The gyoza were particularly excellent. All were made in house. The price was very good (but higher than the new style 'buffet volonte' restaurants in Montlucon. I will definitely visit again, hopefully at a busier time/in the evening. Personally I'm not a fan of the pre-printed, mass-market cocktail lists that appear in many restaurants, this one included.
