Cafe Strada

Reviewed By Michelle S - Wellington, New Zealand

We visited Strada for breakfast on a Monday morning in the summer. It offers a varied blackboard menu and lots of cabinet options. We began by ordering granola for one of us, and scrambled eggs for the other, along with coffee. Everything came out in good time, we found a copy of the morning newspaper and enjoyed our breakfast in the light and airy space which this cafe occupies on a street corner in downtown Masterton. The cafe is popular, but still not too noisy and it was a good place to have a conversation. The coffee was good - so we decided to order another coffee each, along with toast for one of us and a muffin for the other. The coffees and muffin came out, but somehow the toast had been missed. You learn a lot about a cafe when something goes wrong. The staff couldn’t have coped better with this. My toast was re-ordered, and when it came out they made me a fresh, hot cup of coffee to go with it. Brilliant service. The cinema toilets are available for cafe customers to use and the cafe is in the heart of the local shopping district, so an ideal place to begin, end or take a break during a shopping trip to Masterton.

The best part of this cafe is the staff.Very friendly. A pity the service was on the slow side. The food, when it arrived, was good and the coffee excellent. I'm not sure about the decor. It was certainly unique so, in a way, charming.

A regular eating place when in Masterton. The selection of meals/snacks is excellent, ranging from a light tasty snack right through to a full meal. The pies are delicious. Only snag is that it is, quite rightly, very popular and busy at peak times, resulting in some delays. If not in a hurry, though - - worth the wait. Recomnend

The Village Grinder

A bright and friendly atmosphere with plenty of parking close by. Big windows let you see what's happening outside. Café style cabinet meals and a wide selection of brunch options. Kids menu available.

After not finding anything suitable and less busy in South Wairarapa we decided to stop in Masterton. Kuripuni is a suburban shopping centre south of the main commercial area and there were several cafes open to choose from. Although advised our meal would be at least 30 minutes we decided to stay as the outside Seating area near the road was available a a very pleasant place ti sit and relax. The drinks- a smoothie each and coffees arrived within about 15-20 minutes . This was fine as we enjoyed the Sunshine and some water first. The actual meal- a Grinder? breakfast was closer to 45 mins arriving post order but it was worth the wait. Nicely cooked eggs- one person chose fried and the other scrambled, plenty of bacon nicely cooked and not fatty, a gourmet sausage, a hash brown and tomato with a slice of toast- we thought good value for about $17 each.

Fragrant and tasty dinner enjoyed by three of us. Beef Vindaloo (hot), butter chicken (mild) and vege korma (medium) were all devoured.
