I have lived in Lafitte for 25 years and lived across the street from a restaurant and I always eat at Jan's instead of the one across from me.

Restaurant des Familles

Bayou des Familles, a lazy waterway home to many alligators, turtles, egrets and other wildlife, takes center stage as our restaurant's design provides its diners with a natural picture show. It's in this setting where friends and family unite to experience southern Louisiana charm and culture in its finest form. It's an experience your friends and family will not soon forget. The 17-mile journey from downtown New Orleans will take you through the Jean Lafitte National Park. You'll arrive at Restaurant des Familles and park under moss-filled century old oak trees. The restaurant's Acadian-style architecture provides a glimpse of bayou life that once was. Our menu features authentic representations of Cajun and Creole favorites such as Crawfish Etouffee, Seafood & Okra Gumbo, Grilled Redfish and Turtle Soup. Our signature dish, Alligator Stuffed Mushrooms with Alligator Sauce Piquant will tempt even the most timid diner. We look forward to your visit.

Ate late lunch after a Lafitte swamp tour. Service was prompt and polite. Food was ok, but the gumbo was thick not thin like the chef at the cooking school said it should be. The roux was also more like a flour gravy than the dark liquid.
However the shrimp and catfish poboys were both good. Shoestring Fries were especially fresh and crunchy.

The food was good and they have a wide variety on their menu at a reasonable price. Just during peak times seem understaffed - 1 waitress doing it all up front - but it does have limited seating. I would suggest not going at prim eating time 5:30-7 PM

Delicious gumbo, seafood platters, poboys, and so much more.....

Reviewed By Warren F

We started coming here when we lived across the bayou almost 40 years ago. We would come by boat because it shorter. We moved away and happened to be close so we drove down. We remembered how good the food was then and now it is even better. Soft shelled crab poboy. A 10. Seafood gumbo extraordinary. May be the best fried oysters I have ever eaten. Well worth the drive.

This restaurant is worth the drive on the outskirts of town (Jesuit Bend)....settled next to a gas station, you would not think this place much at all. However, the roast beef poboy was the best I have had in this town! And while friendly service is difficult to find outside the tourist traps, owners and operators here know how to treat customers nicely. It has become my family's favorite spot. They even have a seared tuna salad for health conscience appetites. I even had them cater a gathering and it went really well! People raved about the food.
