Lemon Grass

The best way to describe this spot is a poor imitation of Panda Express. It's greasier without as many options. It's not a comfortable place to dine. Mostly it's a spot for locals to grab a quick bite. If you're a tourist it's probably best to avoid. If you're looking for a "local" spot there's also better choices around. Service was not friendly and it wasn't very clean.

Moonstruck Patisserie

Moonstruck Patisserie is a bakery specializing in European pastries and desserts. Breakfast features a full line of croissants, quiche, rock buns, French press coffee and a full line of loose teas. Moonstruck also features Hilo's finest desserts - custom European style cakes and cheesecakes. Our customers also rave about our iced coffee and ginger peach tea.

It's a patisserie, which sets the expectations. The pastries and baked goods have a distinctly French slant, but are well-executed and tasty. (And calories on vacation don't count, do they?) Variety is pretty good for a small place - but it is a small place. Not to worry, though, there's plenty on offer. It's unique in town and in general on this side of the island, so comparisons are a bit difficult. Compared to some of the big-city patisseries - particularly (duh) in Paris, it's merely good, but that's a pretty high standard, especially since I think the nearest competition is a boat or plane ride away.

There's no seating, so it's strictly a carry-away sort of affair.

Paul's Place

We had great recommendations for this little spot through our travel book, so we made sure we went. This was our first meal in Hilo...and we didn't really realize how small it truly is. 3 tables! So if you are short on time, plan ahead and get a reservation. We went in and put our name in for about 2 hours later...which worked out well, giving us time to thoroughly explore the Hilo Farmer's Market. Our meals here were amazing - definitely recommend the eggs benedict with the non-traditional hollandaise sauce. My wife had the Belgian waffles with fruit, which were also delicious. To add - the hosts are amazing. We were there the day of the missile scare and were really unsure of what to do. We popped back in prior to our reservation to ask for advice on what to do, and they helped us feel a whole lot better about the whole situation. Definitely go if you can - they do also do lunch.

While this is still (at least partially) an L&L, it is also a Chinese restaurant? It was kind of confusing. The menu is huge and rather confusing to navigate. The counter service was OK but there is definitely a language barrier. I had the seafood combo and my husband had the classic combo, both of which were tasty typical Hawaiian plate lunches. I'd try L&L again, just maybe another location.

This is a run of the mill Thai restaurant with no standout dishes. Stop by for a Thai coffee or tea; not much else to recommend about the food.
Pad Thai came gummy with tasteless sauce and I did not want to investigate further on my dime. Since the only other place to eat nearby is a McDonald's, you may want to try tthe Spoonful, but I cannot say much else good about it.
Sory.

The only difference in there food compared to any other McDonald's is this burger that I have never seen before...it has hawaian sauces on it and it looks terrible. I didn't try it, so I really can't say if it was good. Everything else looked just like any other McDonalds

Da Bomb Burger ($10.95) is a ½ lb. burger with a spice rub topped with bacon, mushrooms, and bleu cheese served with French fries. This burger is definitely “da bomb”! The homemade beef patty is what makes this burger so thick and juicy. I love when a burger is topped with bacon and bleu cheese! The bacon adds a salty, smoky flavor. The bleu cheese adds a creamy, punchy, zingy flavor. The fries are crinkle cut and fried to perfection, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Rating: 5/5

Oyster Chicken Plate ($9.95) is their famous OC sauce marinated chicken and served with rice and salad. The chicken is tender and the OC sauce seasons the chicken just right for the grill. The sauce on top reminds me of a creamy Russian dressing with sweet and tangy flavors. Rating: 4.5/5

Loco Moco ($9.95) starts with rice topped with a handmade beef patty, brown onion gravy, and easy-over eggs with more rice and salad on the side. This is the best loco moco I have ever had! It sticks to its roots with the main ingredients of rice, hamburger patty, gravy, and egg. Being from Hilo and a profound “loco moco” connoisseur, there are two things that make this loco moco great: handmade seasoned beef patty and homemade brown gravy. You can taste the love that Chef David has for his ingredients. The handmade beef patty is locally-sourced and tastes like a juicy steak. The gravy just has a richness to it that is just miles away from the typical brown gravy. “Dis loco moco wen broke da mouth!” Rating: 5/5

Blackened Ono ($9.95) is a daily special that you may find on a day you visit. Chef David only uses fresh, local-caught fish. The fish is seasoned and blackened to perfection with a great sear on the outside for a succulent, delicate fish on the inside. Sometimes a blackened technique means spicy, but not in this case. Restaurant quality fish dish at a lunch counter! Who knew! Rating: 5/5

Must try handmade fresh mochi! So many choices the sampler pack will not satisfy. Must try fresh strawberry mochi. The kamato (azuki & walnut) was tasty as was the ginger mochi. Plan to wait a little as it's made to order but they offer samples of generous portion size which confuses your decisions even more!
