Hastings Fish & Chip Shop

Reviewed By kazj64 - Melbourne, Australia

We have been going to this fish shop for years and it has never disappointed. There have been many owners in this time and each one has maintained the high standard of food. On the odd occasion we get our order a little greasier than usual, this is not enough to turn us off though. Highly recommend this local favourite fish and chip shop.

The Galley Cafe

Reviewed By Peter S - Rome, Italy

Galley Café, Western Port Marina, Hastings, Victoria
It was our w/e in the Mornington Peninsular – we’d stayed in a rustic little ex-settler style cottage on the way to Crib Point – and, following an interesting couple of hours late morning/early afternoon in the Victorian Marine Centre nearby, it was time to head north; we were looking for a convenient snack/lunch option – somewhere comfortable with a view. Follow the coast of Western Port Bay north with French Island across the water on your right and, little more than 5 km later, you’ll come to Hastings. Take the first turning to the right and follow the houses round to the glamorous-looking Western Port Marina.
Definitely yacht country – rows of exotic modern barges with a handful of classics from earlier times – lined up in their moorings and devoid of people; with masts and rigging scissoring back and forth one-to-the-other under the impact of the sheltered waves. In the channel at the end of the jetties and next to the seawall there were sports fishing boats, cabin cruisers and the occasional yacht heading into or out of the entrance to the marina. This is the view that you get from the aptly named ‘Galley Café’. Where we sat you couldn’t quite see round to the entrance – just the boats passing.
We’d assumed that there would be a café quay-side – hemmed in by the kinds of shops and services that help keep the boaties afloat – and had wondered about stopping off at the large restaurant/café that we’d seen to our right as we entered the elegant reserve/parking area adjacent to the marina. That said, we eventually parked in the shade of a mature tree over by the service shops and walked to the Galley Café.
‘Kitchen’s closed’, said the woman behind the counter – as we stood to one side exploring the attractive-looking list of sandwiches described on the board above her – and before we’d asked.
Hmmm. ‘Does that mean there are no sandwiches?’ It did.
‘Nothing in the display counters?’.
‘Nope’.
It was around 2.45 pm.
‘Sandwiches are made to demand’
(A hard little message then – delivered with just that hint of brusqueness: ‘take it or leave it’ – no friendly/half-apologetic smiles).
So …. it meant moving elsewhere, eating nothing or (easiest choice) selecting a couple of sugary/sweet cakes. We ordered – carrot cake, apple cake (when we’d much rather have had salad/ham, salad/cheese on brown, etc.) & two milk shakes.
We paid A$22. Cakes were OK – for cakes; milk shakes were good – large and full of flavour – chocolate & lime. Food and drinks followed us out, and so did closure for the day - clearing up the tables and piling the chairs. ‘We’re getting ready to close’, said the girl. ‘There’s few people about’. She hovered near our table, clearing it before we’d finished our milkshakes.
Great place to watch the world go by – not that there was much moving in the marina – but comfortable and easy.
The café (and particularly the delightful location) rates ‘good’, but this category isn’t available. So, it becomes ‘average’.

La Porchetta pizza recently started a home Delivery service. Never having had their pizzas I took a chance and ordered a mushroom vegetarian. It was delicious, non greasy, delivered hot and quickly, generously topped and reasonably priced. Will definitely order again or attend the restaurant for a meal.

My friend and I decided on morning tea brunch here. I had coffee and banana bread with ricotta and honey and she had coffee with ham and cheese croissant and small chips. Both were great. We were acknowledged on entering and another staff member called to help out with the influx of customers. Always happy to go here.

Marina Bar & Bistro

Reviewed By Zeniba - Melbourne, Australia

We attended for dinner, the wait staff were great very friendly and accommodating, we were served by several different staff and all were lovely. Food was a little average which was disappointing. We had read some good reviews and were quite looking forward to something really good. We had a bruschetta for entrée which had a little too much topping which just all fell off plus burnt bread which unfortunately we could taste throughout. Mains we had the steak & bacon pie, sounded so scrum but was pretty basic and had very little taste at all, the veggies were in a separate bowl with potato on the bottom which had gone soggy from veggies sitting on top. we also had the Beef Cheeks which were cooked well but the sauce on top was not great it was too strong and couldn't taste anything else and the parsnip mash was really lumpy. The saving grace of the meal was the pecan pie which was terrific.

Great spot in the Main Street if Hastings for a coffee or a meal. We stopped for breakfast and a coffee on a bike ride, and the meal and coffee were both really enjoyable. Staff are really friendly, prices are moderate, and you indoor or alfresco dining options. Worth a stop.
