We had the pleasure of staying at the Warteck Hotel while visiting Freudenstadt, Germany. The day was cold and dreary so our party decided to dine at the hotel restaurant. We couldn't have been more pleased with our dining experience. The ambience is warm and inviting, while the food is a true gourmet's delight. Chef Glassol is a creative genius. The presentation of the dishes made them almost too attractive to eat! We enjoyed both the venison and lamb main dishes and found that all of the ingredients were fresh and of the highest quality. The creme brulee and panne cotte were delicious also and capped off the perfect meal for a cold, rainy evening.

My fiancée and I just returned from our vacation to the Alsace, France and the Black Forest region of Germany. Although I visit trip advisor often to see what others have to say about their experiences, I am not usually one to write a review myself. However, our experience at the Langenwaldsee hotel's restaurant stood out so much that I truly feel that it deserves such a review, as our evening here turned out to be the best experience of our entire trip - and that's saying something, given the excellent Alsatian food we had had just before crossing over to the German side.
After a long and busy day visiting some of the southern black forest highlights and en route to Baden-Baden, we stopped for a full day to relax off the beaten path in Freudenstadt. We had already stopped for a light lunch earlier in the day in the city of Freudenstadt, where we felt that our meal was nothing special, so for dinner we followed many of the great reviews on tripadvisor to a restaurant 15 km east of Freudenstadt, as we were looking for both good food and a scenic outdoor view in the black forest. After driving out there, we arrived at 6:45, and we were told that the kitchen closes at 7, so it "would be difficult" to accommodate us for dinner. As we're new to the area, we didn't really know what to expect, though we thought that it seemed quite early to be closing for dinner. Given our first impression, however, we weren't sure if we would find a good place open later than this, so we headed back in the direction of our hotel in Freudenstadt to see if we could find something open along the way, or with thoughts of returning to the city if that didn't work out. Right before we got back to Freudenstadt, we passed a charming little hotel - the Langenwaldsee, and realizing it was right on the lake, we decided to stop and see if we could find a kitchen still open with perhaps a scenic view of the lake.
We ended up being so thankful that we stopped here! When we arrived, we were told that the kitchen "of course was still open", and were led out to the hotel's wooden second-floor Terrace overlooking the Lake Langenwald. We were greeted by a smiling young lady who was certainly the friendliest server that we had on our entire trip. After realizing that we were foreigners and our German was limited, the owner of the hotel came out (Regrettably, I didn't catch his name), and offered us a warm welcome to his region, and strongly recommended us to try some of the house-made Maultaschen (a ravioli-like dish) that is a specialty of the black-forest. I ordered the maultaschen with spinach filling, and my fiancée tried the maultaschen with meat filling, which were in a delicious riesling sauce and accompanied by some of the freshest vegetables I have ever tasted in my life, as well as a homemade German potato salad that was both tart and sweet - delicious. Moreover, while we were waiting and enjoying the views of the lake, the owner brought us a complimentary appetizer - a delicious salad made of some extremely fresh local vegetables and herbs - so that we could sample some of the products of the region. Also during our dinner, we were having fun trying to decipher the German term of phrase that was written on the wall of the hotel (which we later found out to be a saying of the original owner of the hotel a generation back), and we asked the present owner if he could tell us what it meant. After he couldn't figure out what one of the words meant in English, we told him not to worry about it, but he returned nonetheless a minute later with a German-English dictionary and figured it out for us!
Between our incredible food and scenic views over the quiet lake, we finally found the enjoyable evening and relaxing atmosphere that we were searching for in the black forest. We were so thankful that we accidentally stumbled upon this hidden gem, and were only sorry that we didn't stay in one of the guest rooms at this charming hotel. My compliments go to the owner and the charming young lady who served us, and I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone in the Freudenstadt area, particularly when looking for a nice relaxing evening with a quiet atmosphere and beautiful scenic view. Great value and not too expensive. Exquisite, fresh, and local food; more than welcoming service; and great, scenic views - Truly a hidden gem in the black forest!

We ate here on a Sunday evening - there seem to be quite a few places to eat in the town, but we were staying in the hotel for the night so it was convenient to eat here. It is situated on a street which leads off the main square in Freudenstadt. The restaurant is very pleasant to sit in, and the service is friendly. The menu is long, and has several Swabian dishes. We shared a mixed salad to start - this was delicious, with a huge mixture of different salads (carrot, coleslaw, white radish, dill cucumber, potato salad, lettuce with a creamy dressing and a few more which I have forgotten) - all for 3.5 euros. Then we had pfefferlinge (fresh chantarelles) with a speck (ham), cream and herb sauce, served with home-made spatle (noodles) - all absolutely delicious (see photo). Mine cost 11.50, and my partner added a pork steak for an extra 3 euros (the pork was delicious, very soft and not at all dry). Wine is served in 25cl jugs, so we had two different types of local half-dry wines, both delicious, costing around 3.50 each. The whole meal came to 38 euros and was a great pleasure.

We were recommended by the owners of the Hotel Adler for the atmosphere in the restaurant which was great with small eating rooms, bench type seats with lots of cushions. The staff were very apologtic when they realised they had not given us a menu in English and were very quick to right this. The steaks were excellently cooked and the taste was perfect, accompanying potatoe dishes also very tasty. Drinking the local beer we thought 56 euros for two perfect steaks and drinks was excellent value for money.

Kniebis is a beautiful small town and this restaurant has some great views of the landscape. The interior is wooden and feels homely, while the staff was dressed in typical German waitress outfits, adding to its authenticity.
I ordered a local special, a plate with sliced local sausage in a special sauce and lots of oil. This was served with bread. The dish was okay, quite oily for my preference but filling nonetheless.
Service was fast but the staff had a cold attitude (I don't recall seeing even a smile).
The Weissbier was quite good and served nicely chilled on a very hot summer day.

A lovely interior which unfortunately lacked atmosphere. I appreciate we are in Germany but a brewery is an English attraction and there were no menus available in English and no direction from staff. The food being served looked great but it would have been nice to have been able to choose rather than a random stab in the dark.

Saw the sign for Kaiser's Steak and Schnitzel and had to go in. Very traditional small restaurant with outstanding service. We arrived on RostBratenAbend and it was fantastic so I would highly recommend that dish - they have steakabend and schnitzelabend as well. DON'T expect a touristy atmosphere as this is the real deal - German only, small selection of beer, and limited menu. Nice break from our tourist travels.

While driving around the Black Forest area we stopped in Freudenstadt for lunch. The location in the central square at the heart of the town is excellent and obviously easy to find.
Of the numerous restaurants in the vicinity it was the busiest (not counting the adjacent associated? Antica Gelateria dessert place). We were both very pleased with our lunches. I had a "chef's salad", my companion a pizza. Pricing was a bit high but definitely in line--even a little less--than what I've found to be the norm in the general Black Forest region.
If you are doing something similar to us--driving south from Baden-Baden via the "high road" with Freudenstadt your likely lunch destination--I certainly recommend Da Michele.

Best lasagne we have had in quite a while. Good atmosphere and good service. Being a couple of roads away from the market square means you can avoid the coach loads descending there!

On our way from the south to the north we ended up eating here one night.
While I really liked the scallops (well cooked) I was totally disappointed by the Pizza. To be honest, the pizza tasted blend and was under cooked. You now when the middle part is to soft and the dough is wet. This was not only the case with mine but also with the other one.
Service was nice, though.
