Panda Restaurant

Reviewed By Jean-Louis R - Libreville, Gabon

Fianarantsoa is decidedly full of surprises! Located next to another great hotel/restaurant, the Cotsoyannis, the Panda is a small place that appears, at first sight, to be a typical chinese eatery. Walking in, one cannot avoid noticing the parge painting of two pandas copulating and rather bare decor. However, a quick look at the menu indicates the place's potential:
- Potamochère stew (wild boar)
- Dendroncygne au poivre vert (wild duck in green pepper sauce)
- Thon fumé au baies roses (smoked tuna with pink peppercorns)
Not only did these disches sound incredible, they were more importantly delicious!!
There was only one waiter on the night we visited, and the place was packed full with locals and tourists. He did not flinch and managed to serve us all with a smile. Bravo!
In short, Panda is one of those places that takes you for a spin, reminding you what good service and a great meal can be! Misaotra betsaka!

The dining room is nice, quite small and has a private feeling to it. Would be good for a romantic dinner. The menu was interesting; we stayed on HB at the hotel and where not able to chose from the main menu. At the bar they prepared for us a very good pina-colada. They also have a nice wine list with enough choice. The food is ok imitating french style 'fine' dining.

We stayed in the hotel for 2 night during our visit to Isalo and it was the best one we have stayed during our 1 month visit to Madagascar. We don't have one bad thing to say about the hotel, everything was on 5+ stars level. The rooms are modern, super clean, beautifully decorated, large and with all the amenities expected. Stuff is very friendly, helpful and knows English very well. The food is delicious and the common areas are very comfi.
The hotels grounds are breath taking and definitely worth exploring. The massage lounge is divine and a good massage after a long day of trekking in Isalo is very recommended. There is also horse riding trips available on the grounds, great option to explore the area around the hotel if you are up to it. We certainly enjoyed it.

We had just one night here on a whirlwind tour of 17 days in 16 different places in Madagascar, and were very impressed with the lovely setting. We had a beautifull room, with all comforts, including a big bath with plenty of hot water and large fluffy towels(how do they achieve that here?). Highly appreciated on a trip that here and there lacked creature comforts. (Although, of course, Madagascar is a great place to visit and experience nature and many of it's creatures.)
We also enjoyed a great diner out on the Terrace. In short, a stay to remember and THE place to stay inthis area.

Hotel - restaurant like a surreal hotel. Since we had over-travelled and that was our return journey to the capital to leave the next day the establishment was:
Impressive in offering room and food in a mountain plateau area specializing in soap, oil, meat and tobacco industries. The area is of interest for the wine production too.
The cantonese fare offered is inexpensive and convincing, the hotel accommodation is spacious and romantically clumsy. Wifi facility free.
We were impressed by two Germans who suggested, that was during our first visit in 2003 when we stayed at the hotel too that two unspoiled areas exist: Madagascar and 'Burma'.

La Surprise Betsileo

Reviewed By Bregje N - Amsterdam, Noord-Holland, Netherlands

This family-run business resides in an old traditional Betsileo house(hence the name), tastfully renovated, on the road towards Haute Ville.
A friendly welcome, nice ambiance, very attentive staff (fluent in French), interesting chat with the proprietor but especially; grilled egg plant, grilled chicken with lemon-thyme-butter sauce, sauteed potatoes & veggies and the lime sabayon!!!! totally made my evening after eating lots of rice and zebu.
Budget wise; this meal -including a rhum arrangée and a tonic- cost me 25.000 AR, money well spent I believe.
> If thinking about going with a group, ring ahead as there are about 8 tables.

Recommended by our driver/guide, we stopped here for lunch en route to Ranomafana.
This is a 1950's restaurant in a style which you would not be surprised to see in rural France.
The service was very good, staff pleasant and the food of a good Malagasy standard.

Best Breakfast in Town says it all. SO much frensh fruit, homemade fruit jucie and yoghart and jams and bread and eggs and tea/coffee/hot chocolate....
Definately worth a visit, you can try all those funny fruits you see at the market but don't know what they are- and you'll find out you love them.
Service was great, Patrick and Julienne are lovely.
Lovely location too, in the old town of Fianarantsoa.
