Where to Eat in Canmore: The Best Restaurants and Bars

October 10, 2017 Leonardo Torrence

Catapulted to fame for its part in the 1988 Winter Olympics, this former coal-mining town in the Canadian Rockies is a perfect base for visiting some of the country’s most impressive national parks. First stop for most visitors is the ski trails in Canmore Nordic Centre Provincial Park. Contemplate natural wonders at the Museum and Geoscience Centre, and mush through the snow on a sled-dog tour.

We had breakfast this morning at Rocky Mountain Bagel Co. and were very impressed. The atmosphere is cozy and the staff are friendly. The bagels are extremely fresh and delicious, and their breakfast bagels are piping hot and to die for. Great local coffee options as well. This was a great way to start our day and we’ll definitely come back on our next trip to Canmore.

Love the Rocky Mountain Flatbread Pizza Company. Their food, their ethics, their community involvement, their happy meat...and by far the deliciousness of their pizza. We go back every time we are in Canmore, and we take home their frozen pizzas to cook as well. Half pepperoni/naturally meaty is a great combo to start with!

I visited because this restaurant was first on Trip Advisor and the breakfast menu. There were many other restaurant choices. The service was friendly and efficient and the space is nice. The food was ok ( panini and avocado toast) and I thought the prices were high for what we ordered. I will say that this is my first visit to this area and I think these prices are likely just part of the expense of being here.

We went for a birthday dinner at The Trough in Canmore, and it was a strong choice. The scallop and pork belly appetizer sounded like an odd combination, but it was very good. Alberta back ribs were smoky, super tender, and the serving size was ginormous. Lac Brome duck was perfectly prepared. We ended up sharing sticky toffee pudding for dessert (the ribs serving really was huge), which was also first rate.
Excellent wine list, even by the glass.
An excellent place to have a nice dinner.

I've been to Crazy Weed a few times when I am in Canmore, and am consistently impressed. They have a real fusion of foods from Korean Be-Bim-Bap to pork shortribs, classic steaks and some interesting vegie options. Last year attended Tapas and it was awesome and therefore returned with friends and we were so disappointed this time. We arrived on time, ordered, all the vegetable tapas came out promptly, but the chicken and beef were considerably delayed. We finally received the last two tapas (beef and chicken) and no sooner did we finish eating them we were asked if we wanted dessert, we declined, then two different staff asked up to to finish up (We were still drinking wine) as they had people waiting for our table. I won't be returning.

We enjoyed an early dinner at an outside table as August was concluding. Our server was relatively attentive, though she had the entire restaurant on this quiet Sunday evening. She also went MIA when we needed to have a plate re-heated. Stoney's bar and grill, in the same building, the casual restaurant was much more active. I had the New York strip and the person I was eating with had the salmon- I enjoyed my steak quite a bit, the salmon was decent. We had salads as appetizers- the Rustica salad was nicely done, the Ceasar equally good.
If traveling from the states and charging it on your card, I was charged in US dollars- however purchases made on the same day with the same card with given a 4% better exchange rate if billed in Canadian dollars.
The immediate view of the golf course was sometimes amusing, sometimes distracting.

We are Canmore locals, and know better than to go to restaurants on a long weekend, but this was a significant birthday occasion, so we chose this place, which has earned a pretty good reputation locally of late.
We were not disappointed, it worked out really well.
Located in the Silver Creek Lodge on Mountain Ave, (Close to the strip of gas stations), approach from the west, as the road is one way. Plenty of parking on the street, not very close to transit options.
The restaurant has a fresh clean ambiance, thankfully lacking klitzy Asian style decor. The menu offers a fairly wide range of Asian inspired dishes, leaning definitely to the Japanese style of cuisine. Make a reservation to be guaranteed a table.
Being a fairly large group, we probably ordered just about everything on the menu, which is organized to include Soups & Salads, Tempura, Raw Bar, Sushi, Tapas, limited selection of Main style meals and Traditional Japanese, and Desserts. All menu items are advertised as Gluten and MSG free, although I suspect that the soya sauce provided in small cruets may contain MSG, as I had a reaction when I got home (I am intolerant to MSG in any significant quantity!).
Our group did not go for any mains or desserts, but ventured widely everywhere else. Most popular choices were the Lobster roll, and the Crunchy salmon sushi, both of which received really positive remarks. We found the miso soup a bit too salty, the nigiri plate bland and boring, and nobody really enjoyed the caterpillar roll. Having made these comments, important to note that there were no left overs, everything was gobbled up! Our two vegans and one vegetarian all found plenty to choose from, and there were no complaints from those folks.
The finest part of the evening was the excellent service. A polite, caring and friendly team effort made our evening memorable. The food kept coming on a prompt and regular “schedule” (about as fast as the kitchen could produce it, I guess, we did consume a fair bit!), and we were made to feel very welcome.
Expect to pay C$ 60 per person, including one or two glasses of beer or wine, tax, and tip. (The tip, 18%, was automatically added to the bill, standard practice for larger groups, and was worth every penny!)

Wow the Montréal Smoked meat Sandwich and poutine as well as a burger were scrumptious!! The Montréal smoked Sandwich just melted in your mouth serviced with a very large pickle. The poutine with wiener and cheese curds and gravy. We don't know what's in the gravy, we could not get enough!!! People are so friendly and helpful with food selection that you might like.
Parking is limited as well as Seating but well worth the wait!!
