Where to Eat in Buffalo: The Best Restaurants and Bars

April 15, 2018 Jasper Kershner

Sitting along the Cloud Peak Scenic Byway in the foothills of the Bighorn Mountains, Buffalo is conveniently located between Mount Rushmore and Yellowstone National Park. The town itself is rich in frontier history, allowing visitors to step back in time to the days of cowboys and sheriffs. Have a glass of authentic sassafras in the saloon of the Occidental Hotel, right on Main Street, or head south of town and search out the Hole-in-the-Wall hangout of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

I would classify this as a place you go if you are driving by and want something to eat. It was nice enough. Service was pleasant but very slow. Chicken pot pie was puff pastry with chicken breast and gravy on top - good but not exciting. Same with beef pot pie. Seemed like a nice neighborhood family restaurant. Large portions.

As a morning coffee stop, this isn't the best. The servers / baristas are hardworking, but they overheat the coffee drinks and there is a burned flavor to them. The scones are pretty dry and flavorless.

Lickity Splits

Reviewed By Mark H - Charlotte, North Carolina

Buffalo WY is a wonderfully quaint western town that deserves a stroll through the historic downtown area. Be sure to visit the hotel lobby -- its wonderful. After your stroll, some cool refreshment is in order. Fortunately, there is the Lickity Splits ice cream store. This is an old fashioned, order at the window and take your ice cream away to eat while you stroll or sit at one of the three outdoor tables available. They have a nice variety and good sized servings. They have a good variety of ice cream flavors served up in numerous sundaes, cones, etc. I had a traditional banana split -- though due to a shortage of strawberry ice cream that day, we agreed on substituting huckleberry -- it was wonderful. The chocolate ice cream used was very deep and rich chocolate. So when you need a break from exploring Buffalo WY, this is a good place to cool off.

The selections sounded really good and we decided to chance eating here. We did takeout, and got Happy Family, the crab wontons and the combo fried rice. The Happy Family was pretty good, the rice ok but the beef wasn't great. The wontons weren't wonton skins - I'm not sure what they were. They were more like a flour tortilla. Maybe they are something I'm not familiar with but they weren't crispy at all, and the filling was kind of sweet. I didn't eat them. Other selections may have been better - they do have a large menu.

The Occidental Saloon

On our stopover in Buffalo we had our dinner in the historical Occidental Saloon. The burgers were tasty and the local beer very good. But the best of the evening was the live-music with the owner of the Occidental Hotel, David Stewart, and his fellow Larry Elliott. With the beginning of the song 'Seminole Wind' I got goose-bumps and that was my catchy song for the rest of my vacation. We bought both CDs of David and Larry and have now awesome memories back home in Germany of the wonderful evening in the Occidental Saloon in Buffalo.
