Popeye's Chop House

Have had dinner here on a number of special occasions, food is always good, great presentation. Unfortunately the family seated two tables over had small children who screamed and shouted, putting a damper on an otherwise good dining experience. This restaurant has a tendency to be a little noisy but this was over the top. I'd still recommend it though.

Their way of preparing taco salad isn't like other restaurants' style. It is not a bowl shell with the fixings inside. It is the fixings and chips in a take-out container. The fixings tastes extra strong with taco seasonings.

This place was so busy with drive-through orders, I am speculating the couldn't take time to prepare a taco salad correctly.

My husband's plain hamburger and fries were "very good", he said.

Where do I begin? Well...no matter where you live - you should make a pilgrimage to Valbo's!

Okay, this town is sort of "in the middle of nowhere." So you'd never guess that you'd find a gem as bright and shining as this restaurant. I'm making a HUGE deal out of this because the food was PHENOMENAL!

We stopped in for lunch last week. It was "on our way" to where we needed to go, and apparently they open very early for breakfast. We'd just missed the Breakfast crowd, but got there early for Lunch.

While the menu isn't ridiculously extensive, it does offer many options (including breakfast all day). A little something about me: if Fried Chicken is on the menu, I order it!

When we walked in, we were greeted by a very friendly, sort of familiar type of girl. She gave us extra time to peruse the menu, then was helpful when we asked questions about the offerings (turns out that some of their recipes were her grandparents!).

Anyway, I got the 2-piece fried chicken dinner. My two "sides" were corn and mashed potatoes. I know, I know...**yawn** right?? WELL!!! No sirree! This meal was more than homemade, I think it was made in heaven.

Writing this is difficult, because I'm salivating just thinking about the deliciousness of that meal. The corn was cooked in an indescribable "fried," but not really fried, way. And the mashed potatoes, oh-dear-me!! They were SO GOOD! They're red potatoes, that are "mashed" like the Germans make them. YUMMY!!!!!!! What makes them the best, is the gravy.

When I inquired, I found out that the gravy has shallots and sweet vermouth in it. Hmmm, YOU do the math. It was heavenly!!!

Did I mention it came with a salad? Also - DELICIOUS!

While the food was out of this world, I'd have to say that my favorite part was the Service. You just don't get service like that anywhere, anymore.

We were madly impressed with her genuineness, attention to detail, ability to juggle many customers, and her friendly demeanor. She was kind of one-woman show, and she was impressive! It made such an impression on us, that we are still talking about it a week later.

Valbo's, we'll be back. First impressions stick and I'm convinced it's worth a 100-mile drive, just to enjoy REAL FOOD and REAL PEOPLE. Thanks for being about as U.S.A. as you can get!!

When you see a worker go from taking currency to touching the burgers as she puts them on the grill without washing hands or using gloves, well, I will not go back. People can say the Wallyburger is famous but this unsanitary behavior is a huge deterrent where ever it may take place. I saw it once and I will not see it again.

P J's Diner

Reviewed By Brightens - Carthage, Illinois

It is a long narrow building which will make about anyone claustrophobic. The walls are totally covered with interesting memorabilia. The service and food have much to be desired.

There was no soup of the day although it was on their menu. I asked for their chili which was beans, some hamburger and seasoning. There was absolutely no juice or tomatoes. It was horrible. I took it with us and bought tomato soup at a store to mix with it for the next few days. This did not improve it at all. Yuck.

My daughter had pork chop which had a seasoning which I liked yet she hated it. One grandson had chicken strips which were the standard frozen style anyone an buy at a grocery store. The other grandson had a hamburger which was good size for him because he couldn't eat it all. I tasted it to see if it was dry, yet it wasn't. This was the only good thing about our entire meal.

I told the cashier about the chili, and she said I should have told the server I was displeased. I apprised her that I asked the server to put juice in the chili, yet she must not have heard me because she walked away. It was a busy time of day, yet every customer should receive ample attention. The server returned later to see how our food was good. I shook my head no, and again she walked away.

It was apparent, she was doing habitual actions instead of stopping and listening to us.

Thank goodness I was only visiting Breese, so I don't have to deal with that particular diner again.

Knotty Pine has been the "go to" restaurant for my family for decades. As kids we always went there to celebrate any milestones and it's still a great place for the family to dine today. They have a wide variety of appetizers, sides, sandwiches, entrees, and pizza. I always get pizza, but my husband loves the gizzard and heart baskets. There is something for anyone on the menu. It has two seating areas and has larger tables for big groups. We recently dined with 11 family members.

I've been here a couple times in the last month. I was very surprised by the good food and beer selection. I went with the cheeseburger on pretzel bun and a Blue Moon. Everyone is our group liked their food...mostly a variety of sandwiches and fried sides. I would definitely come back.
