Bandarawela is the second largest town in the Badulla District which is 32 km (20 mi) away from Badulla. Bandarawela is 200 km (120 mi) away from Colombo and about 125 km (78 mi) away from Kandy, the two capital cities of Sri Lanka. Thanks to its higher altitude, compared to surrounding locations, Bandarawela has milder weather conditions throughout the year making it a popular tourist destination for locals. Bandarawela is within hours reach of surrounding towns and cities by both road and rail. The town is influenced by its colonial history and rests among dense, lush forestation occupying a niche among visitors as a base for eco-tourism.

Tasty food at a good price! Go for the traditional Sri Lankan curry, lots of food! Beer is not served but plenty bars in Ella to get a beer after your meal!

If you look for authentic local food (with a few western options as well) try this place. Best for curry (chicken w all condiments) and their potato salad w onions; amazing. Also good for people watching over Main Street. The in-keeper with wife was very friendly and accommodated me after a short waiting time with warmth and a smile.
I will be back when traveling to SLanka in the future.

The best food our family had in Sri Lanka!
Sat in the corner that looks out at the forest and watched the birds while we enjoyed the Sri Lankan breakfast and the fruit roti, both were good. Very close to the start of Little adams peak, would recommend before or after the hike.

Ate here with spouse while a guest at the Hotel Orient. Restaurant is located on the main road and just a short walk from the Bandarawela train station, Post Office and most other places in town.
Enjoyed a dish of veg biryani then split three short eats (potato curry, egg, etc) and topped it off with an Elephant Ginger Beer. Total cost for dinner was 215 rupees (about $1.67 at current exchange rate).
Staff are very friendly and speak English well, If you are unsure, just ask and they will happily answer your questions and ensure a delicious meal. We were the only non-Sri Lankans in the restaurant, but we felt welcome and comfortable. The staff were a bit surprised to learn we are Americans as most foreign tourists to Sri Lanka eat in their hotel restaurant, but we like to get out and experience real life.
When you're in Bandarawela, make a visit to this restaurant and enjoy your meal with their friendly and welcoming staff.

This is definitely one of the best restaurants I have dined in Ella. Food quality is great, presentation is beautiful, and the prices are comparable to the other restaurants in the area. The staffs are also very friendly and accommodating.Thumbs up to Rumesh for making...MoreHi Sir, Thank you very much for your precious comments. Decided to take a break from Sri Lankan food during our 2 week holiday and saw this restaurant included an Italian menu. A (small) queue waiting for a table suggested it was popular and we were not disappointed, the food and atmosphere were very good. We chose a pasta dish, it was very tasty and well cooked, certainly equivalent to good Italian restaurants that I've visited in UK and across Europe but considerably less expensive. We were so impressed that we returned the following evening. The restaurant also offers Japanese and Sri Lankan dishes. The restaurant is a little difficult to find as it is off the main street but is well worth the effort.

Wir hatten hier einen kurzen Stop für eine Tasse Tee auf unserem Weg nach Ella. Die Beratung war super und wir konnten sogar verschiedene Tee Sorten probieren. Sehr nette Leute. Mit kleiner Teeplantage direkt am Shop. Perfekt für eine sehr gute Tasse Tee. Wir können es absolut empfehlen

We Provide Cooking Classes Daily At 4:30pm
This class costs 2000 rupees (£10) and was a good introduction to cooking some of the meals that we had eaten already during our time in Sri Lanka.
The class started at 5 and we cooked until about half 7 before sitting down to eat our meal. All the options we made were vegetarian (though we were told what other veg or meat we could use at home instead). We were shown how to make momordica Curry, breadfruit curry, dahl, artichoke curry, coconut roti and an aubergine dish.
It was fun and informative but I was hoping we would make our own dishes individually. Instead we chopped the vegetables while the guide cooked the dishes himself, he would explain what he was doing and we would make notes for ourselves. We weren't given a recipe book.
The place can be reached by tuk tuk (he can call one for you on the way back) or can be reached on foot if you are staying in Ella town.

Food is tasty and reasonably priced but the service is slow and crap. We were ‘temporarily’ sat on a tiny stool in the corner while we waited for a table to become free but the table went to someone who’d just walked in off the street! Our food took an hour to arrive, even the popadoms that when asked if we wanted with our drinks we said yes!
Come an hour before you want to eat...
