As a Große kreisangehörige Stadt (large town belonging to a district), it assumes some of the responsibilities that for smaller municipalities in the district are assumed by the district administration. Today’s town of Idar-Oberstein is the product of two rounds of administrative reform, one in 1933 and the other in 1969, which saw many municipalities amalgamated into one. The various Stadtteile have, however, retained their original identities, which, aside from the somewhat more urban character encountered in Idar and Oberstein, tend to hearken back to each centre’s history as a rural village. Idar-Oberstein is known as a gemstone town, and also as a garrison town. It is also the largest town in the Hunsrück and has a population of 32,001 (December 31, 2015).

The Brasserie am Schleiferplatz is one of those uniquely German establishments that fulfil most of the requirements of the community. In the morning you can get a good breakfast there, midday they serve a decent lunch, afternoon coffee and cake is available and in the evening they serve dinner (and a damned good one!). Wine, beer and spirits can be had any time of the day with various seasonal specialities, at the beginning of October, Oktoberfest Paulaner bier is available, at the end of October, Federweisser (newly fermented wine) is available, all with the appropriate food. For the night owls late nights are kept at the weekends and often music as well. Try a visit, you will enjoy it.

IF you want famous Idar-Obersteiner Spiessbraten, you can get a great one here.... all varieties of meats: pork, beef, chicken, duck..... Served with a nice salad and a choice of potatoes, to include baked potatoes.... They also offer some nice specials.... the last time I went I had a wonderful salad with skewers of wonderfully seasoned shrimp! It was fabulous!!! The owners are "on the ground" and are very pleasant. The wait staff is wonderful! they have a fabulous "bier garten"----a wonderful place to enjoy a meal outdoors. Nicely decorated!!!

This place has the best steak in all of Germany! Using only salt, pepper, onion, and garlic, the steak has a beautiful smoked taste and is so tender you rarely need a knife to cut it. Zum alten Goten is a 500+ year old house situated on the main street of Idar-Oberstein. The owners are extremely friendly and speak very good English. The cozy atmosphere and wonderful food make this a restaurant worth trying. In fact, we drive an hour just to eat a good steak here.

My wife and I recently spent a week at this hotel, it was a most pleasant stay. A couple of years ago it went through a bit of a bad patch but it is now under new management. They have made a considerable investment in upgrading the fittings and staff training and it is now back to its old standard as a top class hotel.The rooms are comfortable and nicely appointed, the chef really knows his business and most of the helpful and well informed staff speak English, or at least enough to get by with anyone who has a few words of German (one of the problems can be their desire to practice their accent on a native English speaker). Should one not desire to go the whole hog of dinner in the restaurant there is the alternative of the Bistro, which is the bar area serving simpler, but no less good, meals. If you are looking for a hotel in this most attractive area of Germany, you could not go far wrong with a stay here.

Their pancakes are out of this world. A warm atmosphere and friendly staff help you to feel at home and welcomed into the restaurant. Amazing food all around that is always beautifully displayed

Participated in a business/social dinner for about 40 colleagues. We preordered the food however, it took well over an hour to receive our food. Nonetheless, the food was good. I had a small salad with 2 shrimp sticks. It was a lot of shrimp- and it was absolutely delicious! Everyone at my table had done different however all of our comments were the same. The staff was nice and spoke English well. The prices were great and I will visit this restaurant again.

Badisher Hof is a very nice local restaurant specializing in the local favorite speissbraten. They prepare the meat to grill over a open beech wood fire right in the restaurant. The result is outstanding, delicious and is always our favorite place when in Idar-Oberstein. It is very nicely decorated and clean. Very good service.

Just got back from Flugplatz. Not only was the food definitely worth it, the view from the back patio on a good day was amazing. The workers were all very friendly and did their best to communicate. The grounds the restaurant is on, is basically a smaller scaled air strip. while we were out there.It was cool watching home made airplane makers out there flying there planes.

This steak is so amazing, you will consider retiring in the village just to go here on Fridays. They also have a rack of lamb, and prime rib if you can get it. The other food is really good, too, but who cares about that when you can just eat the best steak you've ever had in your entire life! They grill it on this hand-spun rack over an open fire pit and the service is great.
