Where to eat European food in Reykjavik: The Best Restaurants and Bars

March 30, 2020 Marissa Gamble

Reviews on European food in Reykjavik, Capital Region, Iceland. Reykjavik bears the distinction of being the world’s northernmost capital, and for many Icelandic visitors it also serves as a gateway to the rugged adventure options beyond. Recharge after outdoor pursuits in one of the many geothermal springs or luxurious indoor spas. We appreciate Reykjavik’s open-minded and energetic culture that includes a hip and internationally recognized music and arts scene, great food and notoriously "enthusiastic" nightlife.

What a cool restaurant! We had a large party that made reservations and we sat down in a cellar-like part of this restaurant. The low lighting, stone walls, and local decor all added to the ambiance of the place. Service was attentive and the food was excellent! We began with fresh bread & Icelandic butter with sea salt and a fresh mackerel amuse-bouche served in a tiny little ceramic pot with a green pea sauce. It was artistic, creative, and delicious. Next up was a cod medallion with a honey glaze, kale, and pea shoots - delicious. The entree was a nice, rolled up plaice fillet and a tender piece of Atlantic perch with broccoli and a wonderful sauce. All of the sauces, seasonings, and presentation were spot-on. Dessert was a delicious white chocolate brownie topped with a sweet pasty crust and creme fraiche ice cream. From the wine choices all the way through dessert, this was an absolutely wonderful meal and I can honestly say - one of the best we had in Iceland!

In an unusual location outside of Reykjavik , you will find Gallery Fiskur, an excellent place to get fresh seafood. The citrus cured arctic char is an excellent light starter, with the crunch of a nut and crouton mix and pomegranate giving it an elegant complexity. The peppersteak halibut is excellent, fresh meaty halibut paired with a strong black pepper coating, with a nice mushroom cream sauce. The plokkfiskur- cod with mashed potato and cheese, is a traditional, decadent Icelandic dish . The Haddock Monday style also was a nice set of fillets, with potatoes and seared vegetables. They have a selection of drinks- wines, beers and softdrinks. Service is friendly and provides good suggestions. Nice place for good tasty seafood.

Old Iceland Restaurant was recommended to us by the staff of the Sküggi Hotel (excellent lodging!) specifically because I have dietary restrictions. The wait staff and the kitchen are well educated about celiacs disease and food allergies and made me feel very confident upon ordering. (Those of you who have celiacs know the anxiety that comes with eating at an unfamiliar restaurant.)My husband and I each got a different starter and different meal and swapped half way through. Everything we had was so delicious that I regretted being over the age of 5 and couldn’t kick my plate without ending up shamed in a YouTube video. The gluten free bread and seasoned butter was so good that I thought a mistake had been made and it was “normal” bread. Not only did we have a glorious anniversary dinner our first night in Reykjavik, we went back two nights later and had the soup as a main course... AND went back our last night to have the shellfish soup starter and the cod entree.I am looking forward to coming back to Iceland... yes, it’s a beautiful country filled with welcoming people... but I’m coming back for the soup.

Reykjavik Kitchen does not take reservations but it's well with waiting for. Arriving 7:30P on a Saturday evening we had to wait approximately 45 mintutes. You can have a drink while waiting but there's really no room other than standing room while doing so. When we were finally seated, everything was brought out in a timely manner. Our group of four ordered the same appy's and entree's. That was too funny. Starting off with a salad we then each ordered the coffee smoked salmon and we had the black pasta for our main course. For dessert we spit the homemade vanilla ice cream with hot raspberry sauce sprinkled with chocolate ash. Fantastic to say the least.
