Where to eat European food in Fes: The Best Restaurants and Bars

Reviews on European food in Fes, Fes-Boulemane Region, Morocco. The oldest university in the world isn’t Oxford or the Sorbonne—it’s the University of Al-Karaouine, and you’ll find it in Fes el Bali. This walled city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, will transport you back to medieval times. Visit the ancient maze-like quarters of the Medina to Fes el-Bali and the four imposing Gates of Fes, with their distinctive Moroccan tile work. You can walk, or, if you're brave, take a taxi—the daredevil drivers will have you hanging on for dear life.

My sister and I we’re staying at the sahrai hotel where this restaurant is located. First night there rather than go into town, we decided to eat here. It’s a Tuesday night and the place was empty except for two tables on the patio. I ordered the foie gras and a Greek salad. My sister ordered the lobster risotto. The foie gras was very good. But after waiting thirty minutes for a salad I was a little miffed. They had brought my sister’s risotto when they brought my foie gras. She’s now almost finished and still no salad. When it did arrive it had 5 small pieces of well done tuna. With very few olives in the land of olives. When I commented to the waiter about the tuna he said well it is a salad. So I sent it back and asked for it to be taken off the bill. They did accommodate that. It was also hot in the restaurant. The door to the patio was open and any air conditioning there was went out the door. I asked if they would turn the air lower and they did. Dear BloggerLinda,First of all, I would like to thank you for taking the time to write your precious feedback.I am deeply sorry to read that we did not meet your expectations. Attentive multilingual servers. Good drinks at reasonable prices. Clean, comfortable, white linen tablecloth service and professional demeanor at a fair price. Bread and small free tapas were good. I ordered the seafood pizza, and wish I’d ordered one of their better sounding meals instead. I suspect pizza is not their specialty, and wouldn’t want to judge all their meals on this bad choice of mine, since everything else went so well. I’ll try them again if I am in the area.

We were in Fes in January and were on the prowl for an alcoholic beverage. So we were directed to Mezzanine, and we were pleasantly pleased. The restaurant/bar is quite chilled out. We dined and had a few drinks at the roof top area, watched the sunset and took in the vibe about the place. If you're in Fez and looking for a chilled out spot to relax and unwind after a day of touring, pop into Mezzanine for a great atmosphere and friendly staff to go with the view by the roof top terrace.

We had the 340 MAD european menu which was amazing and a great change from all the tagines. We booked in advance as in low season they are not open all the time but we were staying in the Karawan Riad so it was a real treat just to pop down to eat in the wonderful settings. Definitely ask to go on a little tour of the riad if you get a chance. The rooms are wonderful and the sitting areas so pretty and beautifully decorated. There wasn't much choice on the menu it was either steak or fish for the main everything else was set. It was wonderful though, the starter was a great tarte. The mains was very tasty steak fantastically cooked so it was rare. The pudding was a delicious fruity cream and biscuit pudding. The service was discrete and efficient. If anything the service was a little too fast. We ate pretty quickly and it would have been slightly better to have a little more time between courses.

It was easy to find in the Medina. The service was attentive and courteous. We particularly enjoyed the creative appetizers, the steak and the fish dishes. Everything was beautifully prepared and presented and delicious.

My husband and I were excited to kick off our anniversary celebration with a romantic meal at Dar Roumana. The atmosphere is beautiful and we sat poolside. It was annoying because the designated smokers table was located right behind us. That was the first strike.Secondly, I ordered a glass of wine. I never received it. Strike two.My husband, a home gourmet cook, ordered the kefta, which according to the menu was supposed to be lamb. He said it tasted like ground beef and had absolutely NO FLAVOR. If we'd been in a less fancy restaurant, he would have definitely asked for catsup. He asked for lemon instead but it barely helped. I had the fresh peach with poor quality prosciutto ham and minuscule pieces of ricotta cheese as my appetizer. My main course was decent, the sea bass fillet, but it was nothing special. The dessert was an absolute joke. We got the bitter dark chocolate tart that was so uninspired. It was like the chef melted some chocolate and put it in a terrible pie crust and called it a dessert. It was bitter (as advertised) but had no other flavor, not even that of chocolate. We gave it to Omar, our porter, as the only way we'd even eat it as a leftover would be dipped in coffee. The meal was the third strike. This was the most expensive restaurant we went to in our three weeks in Morocco. It was also one of our worst meals. You would be much better off going to a local hole in the wall, unless ambience is your main goal. The waiter was pretty nice but not overly attentive. I give Dar Roumana a hard pass.Dear Dragonfly 727, Thank you for taking time and sharing your review on TripAdvisor. We had the pleasure to welcome you at Dar Roumana for dinner with your husband who have acted the entire dinner time as weird as impossible to the point he attracted the attention of most the people who were dining that night. Starting with asking the waiter if there a female waitress to serve you instead of having a man, then asking very strange questions for the waiter about other client's dining. To answer your strikes:1- The restaurant is a non-smoking and the only designated to smoke is the rooftop terrace.2- We don't serve wine by glass either half or full bottle.3- We receive every day comments and feedback from travellers all over the world who simply love the food and restaurant.4- The waiter could have been amazing if a lady who serves you as requested by your husband. The entire charge for your meal was about 70 Dollars which is a fair price to have dinner in Fez.Kind Regards The Management
