Coq & Bull

Coq and Bull. An unusual restaurant we think. Everyone seems at home. The old hand and young buck. Herbivore and carnivore. Connoisseur and trencherman. The quiet diners and the in-with-a-crowders. Good, honest food. Taste is king and local rules. Wine, i

A warm welcome and a relaxed ambience ......a good start to our evening. Our table was on the first floor, not a large space but not overcrowded, which had a delightful atmosphere. You can byo beer and wine for a small charge but the restaurant sells spirits. We opted for the £16.95 two course menu. The scampi was one of the best I've ever had anywhere, the chicken dish was awesome and the burger was a big hit too. The Banoffee and fruit crumble desserts with Chantilly cream certainly hit the right spot! Add to that friendly, attentive but not intrusive young staff and you know you're on a winner. Highly recommended.

There are some apparently simple menu items, that few restaurants actually deliver on. Steak and chips being one.Setting down a properly cooked, juicy, tasty steak accompanied by delicious, fat, well cooked, fresh chips is no easy task. Most places fail. My meal at La Scala, perfection. Beautiful locally sourced steak and chips to die for. Ten out of ten, and great service from the staff, in a modern, pleasant, and well - lit room. How often is darkness used to disguise dire food? Not here. A faultless experience and one I'll come back to. Highly, highly recommended for this dish.

Another super meal at Oliver's Restaurant. Nice company, great flat iron steak and at superb value on the early bird menu.Last night's treat was an apple tart using what was styled 'Cabin Hill apples'. This is a townland a few hundred metres from the front door. Nice touch. Also it was the name of a local prep school now called Campbell College Junior School.

No 14 at the Georgian House

Reviewed By sheelaghk554

After watching the chef present a demonstration at the recent Clandeboye Food Fair, we were keen to try the newly re-opened Georgian House (under new management). It is a beautiful venue, comfortable, spacious and elegant without being stuffy, with a choice of rooms to accommodate those wanting more or less formal options. It was a Sunday and though we indicated that we were after something light, as opposed to a Sunday lunch as such, we were given only the formal fine-dining lunch menu for that day, with the hostess advising us that it was the only menu available. Out of interest, we enquired about more casual mid-week dining choices, but she appeared puzzled, telling us that the menu remained much the same. Not hungry enough for a main, I chose the terrine starter only, and my companion, the beef main, and we were not disappointed. They were both beautifully presented and executed with a demonstrable attention to detail, with various well-considered accompaniments that were flavoursome and of a high quality. The vegetables were notably good, as was the chutney. We look forward to visiting again soon - when I am more hungry! On a side note, before leaving we asked again for a look at the mid-week menu and there was indeed a menu that was less fine-dining. Surprisingly it appeared to be available too on a Sunday - perhaps there was a miscommunication!

We had decided to try this restaurant after checking the menus, as my OH doesn’t eat any vegetables what so ever and and it can be hard to find somewhere that he has a choice other than fish & chips, chicken goujons or burger, he settle for the fish cake starter but had to yet again choose a burger as everything else had veg somewhere in it, both our starters were nice, I had the chicken spring roll, he did find the burger turned out dry by the time he got half way through it, but it was very tasty, I choose the chicken & beef in peppercorn sauce with a side of salad instead of the potatoes, although the food was, as I say nice it was the service that let this place down, there was three members of staff on the evening we were there and although pleasant, none of them went out of their way to see if we were happy with everything, the bill was asked for and left on the table, we put the debit card on the saucer but nobody made any move to come and take our payment, two members of staff walked past a few times, so we headed to the bar area to pay, maybe this is what you are suppose to do but if they had said when they brought the bill we would have known what to do, we were not asked if we enjoyed our meal or if everything was ok, so sorry guys but we will not be back. Hi DavidI am so sorry to read about your awful visit with us that has left you and your OH feeling like you would not come back. Actually sorry I have just read your review and can't see why you have left just so unhappy.I have spoken to my staff and let them know I am disappointed that they didn't check if you were enjoying your meal as we pride ourselves on doing this. We do not rush to get customers money but perhaps they should have noticed your card or you or your OH could also have just requested they bring the card machine to your table. If you had let them know your OH didn't like vegetables or if your OH had said himself we could have done most of the dishes without vegetables and offered something in their place. Sometimes it is only a matter of asking rather than writing!!!!I hope maybe you read your review back and realise it is a little harsh to say you won't return due to a couple of tiny things and we prove to you next time we do welcome everyone to our restaurantNicky CaugheyDirector
