Pizzeria Ristorante Al Carmine

I was directed to this joint by looking at what Tripadvisor had to say about gluten-free dining in Padua. Ristorante Al Carmine got plenty of good write-ups so I was eager to try it for myself. And it didn't disappoint. It was slightly tricky to find, away from the bustling city centre, down a side street and in a zone seemingly dominated by high-rise and student accommodation, a few minutes' walk from the Ferrovia station and also from the Cappella della Scrovegni. But this didn't stop its being very busy at lunchtime with lots of walk-ins, me included, presumably because it's well known locally as a good place to eat and hungry people converge on it from all directions. I certainly formed the impression that several tables were occupied by office-workers who'd come out together and were doing business over lunch. The restaurant staff were friendly and helpful and there was an English as well as an Italian version of the menu. But the star of the show was the gluten-free offer, all very clearly indicated on the menu in a way that's still not so common in Italy. In particular there was no doubting from this that they effectively had managed to provide an alternative version of most things, including pizza, and since a decent gluten-free pizza isn't often encountered over here I thought I'd give it a go. What I got, after some nice gluten-free pseudo-bread nibbles which I'd not seen before and were a pleasant bonus, was a Siciliana which turned out to be a pretty good simulacrum of the real thing: a crisp base topped with tomoato sauce, mozzarella, capers, anchovy and pepperoni. All in all, it was better than many I've had and worth the walk to find it.Since it was lunchtime and I'm not keen on going overboard in the middle of the day, especially when it's warm, I exercised some restraint in what I consumed. But this shouldn't stop me mentioning that the menu not only listed several tempting-looking dessert variations which would cater to the coeliac guest (if I could have managed it I'd have gone for the pancake flled with Nutella) but also the widest range of gluten-free beers I've seen anywhere in Italy (roughly a dozen, I think). In short, Ristorante Al Carmine really pushes the boat out in its attempt to cater to this problematic dietary requirement and embrace those who suffer from coeliac disease and it really does deserve top marks for its efforts. And, yes, I'd definitely go back if I were in Padua again.

A real find, great little restaurant with very friendly staff. Food is amazing authentic and local. The liver/Fegato alla veneziana was sensational. House wine and bottled all good. We were well looked after by Ellena and Gledda. Both had good English although our Italian does get us by. A small restaurant and booking is probably a good idea but they seemed to be able to fit most people in even without a booking.

Nice little place this with extremely friendly and helpful staff. My wife and I had come here for our main evening meal but I would suggest that this is a place to come to savour the wine and have a 'lite bite' to go with it. Can't fault the quality of the food, just the quantity.

This restaurant was amazing. The food and service were a real high point in our first trip to Italy. The staff was very warm and friendly and made us feel very much at home even though we do not speak Italian. The atmosphere was relaxed and the staff seemed like they were a family. We liked it so much the first time, we went back the next day. Highly recommend this restaurant.

We went for dinner here whilst in Padua, and were very impressed. The atmosphere in an old dining room with beautiful paintings and candlelight was sophisticated and yet relaxed. The service was friendly but effective, and the food was superb. The risotto was delicious, the beef was excellent and the desserts amazing. The wine list is comprehensive and well priced and we had fantastic good and wine. I would thoroughly revcrtbis restaurant, which deserves all the plaudits it receives.

We return every year to this cozy, wonderful, family-owned restaurant. Located close to the exposition fair, and next door to the Hotel NH Padova, the modern, clean furnishing, the friendly staff, and especially the always fresh fish and seafood entices us to return. While nobody in the restaurant speaks English (or anything other than Italian), they try hard to communicate, and we have always managed to get exactly what we wanted. A complementary Prosecco and Grissini start the meal. The menu changes every day, depending on what the chef finds in the market. There are always a dozen or so seafood-based appetizers and another dozen or so fish and seafood entrees. The wine list only shows about 30-35 wines, but they are all very good, mostly from the region, and well priced. Service is friendly, helpful and efficient. Make reservations because the place is always packed. By 9:00 pm, there is not a table to be had.

First of lets say that the decor of the restaurant did not appeal to me. I thought the food would be cafeteria style and was expecting something very different than what i got. I had to taste difernt plates this where the best plates in order of great to excellent1. Octopus - primer platy2. Brenzino ( not sure if spelled correctly) 3. Risotto mushroom and vegetables 4. Past with huge clam ( don't know exactly what to call it) All four plate amazing. Great desert chocolate platter five different styles of chocolate in small sizes. Great food, absolutely magnificent service. Which as we know in italy is a disaster in most places.
